Helen Charlston began singing as a chorister and subsequently head chorister of the St Albans Abbey Girls Choir, under Simon Johnson. Recent solo engagements include Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio (Amici Voices), Duruflé Requiem (Trinity College Choir/Stephen Layton) and Stravinsky Mass (Cambridge University Musical Society/Stephen Cleobury). She appeared as a soloist on BBC Radio 3 in a live broadcast of Britten A Ceremony of Carols from St John’s Smith Square, and on Trinity College Choir's Hyperion CD of works by Ēriks Ešenvalds. Forthcoming solo appearances include Bach St John Passion (Voce/Suzi Digby), alto choir II in Bach Matthew Passion in Aix-en-Provence (Gabrieli Consort and Players/Paul McCreesh) and Duruflé Requiem (City of London Sinfonia/Stephen Layton). A keen recitalist, Helen is a current participant in the Pembroke College Lieder Scheme, receiving regular coaching from pianist Joseph Middleton, and singers Sarah Connolly and Roderick Williams. Song recitals have included Schumann’s Frauenliebe und –leben, Trinity College Music Society and a programme of Britten, Strauss and Berg for the Kettle’s Yard Lunchtime Recital Series. Her operatic roles have included Olga/ Eugene Onegin, Florence Pike/Albert Herring, Ino/Semele, Sara/Tobias and the Angel (Dove) and Dinah/Trouble in Tahiti (Bernstein).
