About Head North

Head North's profile picture
Contemporary folk band
Public liability insurance of £1 million
Head North is a high energy 7 piece band mixing traditional and progressive Celtic & Transatlantic tunes and songs in 3 part harmony

Having strong Scottish roots, we play a mix of traditional folk tunes and songs and also a number of our own original compositions. Traditional reels, jigs and marches are given contemporary arrangements, and are complemented by slow airs and songs sung in beautiful three-part harmony. Somewhat unusually, the ages of the members range from mid 20s to mid 60s, which at times makes life interesting (one review referred to us as the Waltons!) but in fact only serves to enhance the creative mix. Over the last eight years we’ve played at a number of great festivals including Larmer Tree, Carfest, Wilderness, Belladrum, Blissfields, Cornbury, and Big Feastival. In addition, we perform at folk nights, charity gigs, weddings and parties, and some events invite us back year after year. We find that our music truly appeals across the generations, and when performing our storming instrumentals and upbeat vocal numbers, it’s not uncommon for the audience to instigate an impromptu dance party wherever they can find space or a provide a caller for more formal sets.

Once again Head North proved to be an enormous attraction and everybody loved you! Your music appeals to all, young and old, and I loved seeing youngsters bopping and oldies swaying and generally everyone so focussed on the music.

Folkworks H, 4 years ago

‘Garvellach Isles’ [...] is an album of considerable quality, clear musical strength with equally obvious vocal potency. [...] Their freshness of approach and readily apparent vivacity, augmented by an ability to present tradition, in its widest sense, through arrangements and self-penned tunes, must lead this band towards a bright future. In short, in the intensely-populated world of music, Head North is worth noticing and ‘Garvellach Isles’ an album worth owning
