Cellist Harry Broom (1997) was born in Birmingham, and started playing the cello at the age of 7. Harry received a scholarship to study his Bachelors Degree at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. In the Netherlands Harry recently completed his masters degree at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag/Royal Conservatoire of The Hague achieving the highest mark. He studied with Larissa Groeneveld and Roger Regter. Previously, he studied at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with Ulrich Heinen and Miguel Fernandes. One of Harry’s main passions is orchestral playing and is involved with numerous Orchestras. Orchestras include the Welsh National Opera, The Halle, BBC Philharmonic, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra Amsterdam, Residentie Orkest Den Haag, Ex Cathedra and the Ripieno Players. In 2022/2023, Harry is a member of the Halle/RNCM advanced orchestral string programme based in Manchester. He will be working regularly with the Halle Orchestra whilst also being associated with the Royal Northern College of Music. Harry is studying under Hannah Roberts and Nick Trygstad for this year. Furthermore, Harry was also a member of City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Orchestral Training Scheme for 2018/2019. Harry has a great passion for teaching too, where he believes it is the utmost importance to educate and nurture the musician in every person. Learning music is such a wonderful thing and it must be available to everyone! Harry has taught privately since 2017 and has had numerous students. He is also a asked to teach at the annual Ingestre Residential Chamber music weekend. In addition he has also presented workshops to school children and also in special schools. More recently, in a chamber music setting Harry has played in Festival Dag in de Branding based in Den Haag, where he performed Meric Artaç’s newest opera ‘The Arrival of Mr.Z’. Premiered in the Nieuwe Kerk, it was also performed at November Music Den Bosch and Muizekgebouw Amsterdam. He has played in masterclasses with cellists such as Jian Wang, Harro Ruijsenaars, Hannah Roberts, Ursula Smith, Felix Schmidt, and Eduardo Vassallo to name a few. Harry has also received orchestral training from Karen Stephenson and Helen Edgar. Harry has always had a passion for chamber music and was part of the Pelargos Quartet between 2019-2022, he has previously received lessons from Robin Ireland, Nicholas Daniel, Louise Lansdown and various members of the Kuss Quartet, Heath Quartet, Castalian Quartet and Gildas Quartet. Harry is also the Festival founder and music director of the British Music Festival Holland, a new music festival that takes place in the Netherlands celebrating British Classical music in all its glory. Harry plays on a cello by Irmela Schlingensiepen, Amsterdam made in 1990.

but not so often do we mention the strings; here they were extraordinary, pouring out a wonderful maturity of tone, not least from the lower cohorts.
