About Guy

An experienced Highland Bagpiper, I’ll bring that unique soul stirring sound to your event, plus a vowel bending kiwi accent!
Bagpiper
Bury Saint Edmunds

For me, the bagpipes are the ultimate expression of culture and identity. They are something which connects me through my father to a Scottish lineage the stretches back to the Picts and the wrong side of Hadrian’s wall. More than something I do, being a piper is part of who I am. I’ve been playing the pipes for over 20 years, having learnt my craft as a boy in my home town of Dunedin, New Zealand. I learnt under the expert tuition of a former Pipe Major of the New Zealand Airforce band. I’ve played with pipe bands both in New Zealand and Britain, competing at a national level. As a soloist I have piped for a wide range of events. Scottish traditions, such as Burns nights and haggis ceremonies. Joyful celebrations at weddings and graduations. Mournful funerals and Remembrance. I am also an experienced highland dancing piper, something which few pipers have experience with. For each type of event, I find the pipes have a unique capacity to stir the emotions of all those who hear them. One of my most memorable performances was piping my rugby team onto the pitch with a sold out home crowd, nothing like marching towards a giant version of yourself on the big screen to inspire some nerves! I also particularly enjoyed the street marches we used to do to lead the graduates of Otago University to their graduation ceremony through the center of town. Although the time they forgot to close the road was interesting! I can tell you that when it came to pipe band vs car, the car blinked first. A large part of authentic piping is the clothes that go to match. As much as the instrument, these are a visual expression of culture. I wear the ancient hunting Gunn Clan tartan, with military pleating (twice as much material for a good extra swing!). This was a kilt made for me and given to me on 21st birthday. From there I am very happy to dress to suit the style of your event. For a more dressed down piping style, I often wear a 5 button waist coat (know as an Argyle), a short sleeved shirt and tie. For the more formal events, or just because it looks good, I wear a Bonnie Prince Charlie Jacket and tails, with tartan bow tie and dress shirt (the Scottish equivalent of a tuxedo). The sound of the pipes have been there for the most emotional moments of my life. Twisting through the mist of dawn at ANZAC day with my Grandfather. A heart reaching lament at the funerals of my loved ones. A joy filled celebration at my wedding. I know just how special this instrument can make an event, and I hope you will allow me the honour of bringing that magic to yours.

Guy was absolutely fantastic! Made our night with his brilliant playing, whilst talking about the subject in hand and the tunes he was playing with a brief description on them. Already enquired for next year!

What an amazing night! Our first time in Chevington and it was literally 'brought to life' by the piping of Guy Wilson. We supped well, enjoyed singing and eating until way past our planned finishing time. Guy stayed and ate with us and chatted to all our guests. His information about pipes and piping was fascinating and - despite the low ceiling in our hall - we were all wanting more music. Thanks Guy, you made the whole thing worthwhile and we made a really good amount to help the church keep its doors open into the bargain.

We had Guy join us for our annual Burn’s Night evening, a three-course meal with proper Scottish traditions! He played everyone into the café and played little sets throughout the evening which added brilliantly to the atmosphere. During the procession of the haggis Guy took point and it was fantastic, followed up by one of our regulars reading the poem. Guy spent the evening chatting to guests and keeping the atmosphere, he was brilliant! Would highly recommend and we will definitely have him back with us next year!

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

The mixture of traditional Scottish melodies, mixed with a relaxed kiwi attitude.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Sport stadiums, pubs, churches, gardens, street marches through the middle of town. Universities, community halls, war memorials. Rest homes, schools, funeral chapels and dockyards. Flower parades, graduations and fun runs. Being a piper, the venues are ever changing and always unexpected. That’s part of the fun.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

My love of Scottish and Irish folk music has always been spurred on by my enjoyment of the Corries and the Irish Rovers.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Preforming as a warm up for the sold out home crowd for the New Zealand Super Rugby team the Highlanders would have to be the moment I’ve had the most eyes on me!

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I’ll always try to be flexible and work in with you as much as possible. If things change in the run up to the event, just give me a heads up as soon as you can.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

I’m afraid not, piping is always best live and in person, and I don’t bring or use any electronic equipment in my performances.

How much time do you need to set up?

I need around 20 minutes to tune up before I first start playing. If I have any long gaps between playing, I may just need a few quick minutes to retune.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Over years of experience, I have a pretty good sense of what tune fits with which mood or emotion, but I am very happy to be guided by your preferences.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes, absolutely. I bring my own instrument, and play without the need for any other type of equipment. I will also come in suitable Scottish attire, and am happy to dress up or down to suit the tone of your event.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

For common piping tunes, as long as you can give me some weeks notice I’m happy to learn a specific tune for you. The fee for this is usually £30, depending on the complexity of the piece. This reflects the rehearsal time. For more unusual tunes, or tunes not normally played in the pipes, it all depends on if I can find a suitable music score.
