About Greg

Bass Guitarist
Southampton

Greg Mudd is the Professor of bass guitar at the Royal Marines School of Music. He started his music training on Double bass at the age of nine, and worked his way through the ABRSM exams under the supervision of Barry Glynn. As he progressed he enjoyed playing and touring with several youth orchestras such as the Dorset Young Sinfonia, Dorset and Wessex Youth Orchestras. In his mid-teens, Greg also began studying the bass guitar, and was soon asked to play in a jazz-funk band; a genre of music that remains his firm favourite! After successfully completing his GCSE exams, Greg studied at Bournemouth College, and it was during this time that he started to play with many local groups, playing a variety of musical genres from jazz to progressive rock bands. One of these bands was called Empty Cage, which were subsequently signed by Dead Head Records. This took Greg to Minneapolis (U.S.A) to record in the world-renowned Winterland studios. In the States Greg also met American singer-song writer Tamrah Aeryn, for whom he now plays and records with when she visits the U.K. Since returning from America, Greg has completed a HND in popular music performance, a PTLLS teaching qualification, a BA (Hons) degree and a Masters in Music (MMus) from the University of Southampton. Currently, Greg performs and records with a variety of Hampshire based artists and performs jazz with pianist Cornel Opera. He fills the bass position in The Why Notes, the Matt Morgan Jazz-bag and is musical director of the Jazz Funk Coalition. In addition, Greg undertakes regular recording and session work, more recently recording for a variety of London based multi-media composers. Furthermore, Greg lectures music in a variety of institutions including Peter Symonds College, and teaches many private students.
