Experienced and successful performers, at the Canterbury Festival (2023 and 2024), plus Medieval Festivals and workshops. Gareth has played the lute and vihuela as a professional, and then met Jeff Alexander in 2022 at Christ Church Canterbury University, where Jeff is Professor of guitar. After a series of concerts- including Latin American guitar duets and lute music-we have joined together permanently to offer great music for corporate functions, receptions and dinners, as well as for weddings. The music is lively, engaging, and always enjoyed by guests. We have both recorded guitar and lute music, and have long and successful solo performing careers behind us.

“During the Medieval Pageant 2024, Gareth Balch gave the audiences an excellent experience throughout the day. He explained the history of the instruments and the repertoire, gave demonstrations on each instrument and chatted to people individually afterwards to answer their questions and give additional information. The audiences were very appreciative and included people of all ages, from pensioners to babies. Gareth also let musicians amongst the audience try out the instruments themselves. We had 150 audience members through the door during the four day time drop-in sessions. For the evening concert Gareth was joined by Jeff Alexander, playing a selection of pieces from different periods.” Christina

“We very much enjoyed Gareth's workshop and concert to tie in with Canterbury's medieval event. The acoustics of the now redundant St Gregory's church (now a theatre) meant that the vihuela, renaissance lute, and guitar pieces could be truly appreciated. Both Gareth and his co-player, Jeff, were so friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the progression of these instruments throughout history, and inspired us with their very focused playing. I particularly enjoyed hearing La Rossignol (the Nightingale) played on two Lutes as originally intended. The delicacy of the sound and the ornamentation was a delight to hear. “

Customer questions

Do you have different line-up options?

Solo lute playing for either player is an alternative. Gareth covers London, Hertfordshire.Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, and Jeff covers Kent, Essex, and south east London. Our line up is two lutes or two guitars, wiht solos in between.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We will always do our best to be flexible. If it is an evening event then a slight change is easy- just let us know as soon as possible in case we have a daytime wedding or reception event, or need to allow more travel time.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

We can offer some recorded lute music (CD), however our main mission is live lute music, and we want to bring that live experience to ausdiences and guests.

How much time do you need to set up?

One hour to one hour 30 minutes is needed as we use the time to tune up historical instruments that are very delicate.

Can you roam around while you perform?

For solo lute events Gareth like to roam around if possible in order to allow the whole audience or guests to experience the wonderful sound of a lute, For duet playing Jeff and Gareth need a static place to perform from.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Yes- please discuss beforehand as our prepertoire changes regularly.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

Yes. We don't bring or use lighting or a PA- that should generally not be necessary if you have the right venue. We have performed in small performance venues seating up to 400, as well as more intimate settings and churches with a good acoustic.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

If you have a particular piece you want to hear, we will cetainly be able to play it if it is in the renaissance repertoire. common examples are "Greensleeves", and "Kemp's Jig."
