About Francis

Francis is a young musician wishing to bring the bassoon to a wider audience
Bassoonist
Colchester

Francis is 18 and began his musical training as a chorister at St. John’s College, Cambridge, where he fell in love with the sound of the bassoon whilst performing with an orchestra. From very early on he decided that he wanted to be a professional musician and to make the bassoon more widely known. He won a music scholarship to The King’s School, Canterbury, at 13 and, as well as the bassoon, he plays piano, organ and viola, sings and has composed several choral and instrumental works. In September 2015 Francis was awarded a place to study at the Junior Royal College of Music (RCMJD) where he was taught by Sarah Andrew. In 2017 he won the Gordon Turner Competition there. In 2016 he played Principal Bassoon in the BBC Proms Youth Ensemble at the BBC Last Night of the Proms. He won the Marlowe Young Musician of the Year Competition in 2017 and was a Woodwind Section Finalist in BBC Young Musician of the Year 2018. Upon leaving RCMJD, he was awarded the Sally Wainwright Woodwind Prize. In October 2018 Francis started his Music studies at Robinson College, Cambridge where he has been awarded an instrument scholarship (bassoon) and is the Principal Bassoon of the University Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. He now learns with Dan Jemison in London. He has a keen interest in conducting having studied this at RCMJD. He has conducted choirs and orchestras and is the director of Ubique – a group of highly skilled young singers who perform in a number of venues, including Cambridge and Colchester. In his first term at Cambridge, he became the Assistant Musical Director of the main Opera performance, Rossini’s Il Signor Bruschino.
