Verified profile

Originally from Caithness in the North Highlands, Erica began studying clarsach at the age of seven with Bill Taylor, and then clarinet aged eleven with Karen Anderson. Throughout her time in school, she performed locally on a regular basis with local groups and as a soloist; she also performed further afield with the Highland Region Youth Orchestra, the National Children's Orchestra of Scotland, and the National Scout and Guide Orchestra. In 2009 she was awarded the Runner-Up prize in the Highland Young Musician Competition. In 2009, Erica began her studies on the BMus programme at Edinburgh Napier University, studying clarinet with Alison Waller. She also began her pedal harp studies at this time with Alina Bzhezhinska. She performed regularly with the university's Chamber Orchestra and Contemporary Ensemble, as well as solo and chamber performances. Erica also performed outside the university, including as part of St Andrew's and St George's Parish Church's Music and Meditation series, at weddings and events, and with Edinburgh University's music ensembles. In her final year, she was invited to perform Britten's A Ceremony of Carols with ENU's Chamber Choir, and as a soloist for Malcolm Arnold's Second Clarinet Concerto with ENU Chamber Orchestra. She graduated in 2013 with First Class Honours. In 2013 she began studying for an MMus in Instrumental Performance at Birmingham Conservatoire with Sally Harrop, Mark O'Brien, Michael Harris and Jo Patton, and continued her harp studies with Catherine White. Whilst there she performed regularly with the conservatoire's ensembles on both instruments, and performed as a soloist in lunchtime concerts and at the conservatoire's Harp Day. She also performed regularly as a chamber musician, including with wind ensemble Forum Ventus. She graduated with Distinction in 2015. In 2015, Erica also performed as a soloist for Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto alongside Catherine O'Rourke with the Highland Chamber Orchestra, and joined the National Youth Orchestra on their tour to China as principal bass clarinettist. Erica has taken part in a diverse range of projects: she composed for and accompanied a reading by Kenneth Steven of his poem A Song Among the Stones on harp; performed as a soloist as part of the Future Blend Project; was a tutor and instrumentalist for the Contemporary Voices Project; performed at the Spotted Dog's Sunday Classics Series; with STAG's choir in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival; with the Mahler Players in their Mahler in Miniature concert series; a NYOS Camerata collaboration with the Hebrides Ensemble; and a jazz project with Mark Lockheart. Erica is based in Worcestershire, where she teaches and freelances; she performs regularly throughout the UK. She is principal harpist for the Mahler Players, and has also performed with, among others, the Chandos Symphony Orchestra, Central England Camerata, and the International Film Orchestra. She is also harp, clarinet and recorder teacher for the RGS Worcester group of schools, and harp teacher for the Kings Worcester group of schools.

Kelly and I had booked Erica for our wedding. Erica was amazing throughout the entire process. We asked for some specific songs, and Erica learnt them and mastered them by the time our wedding came around! The music sounded beautiful and the moment was captured perfectly on the day, we both cannot thank Erica enough! Would recommend 100% it’s worth it! Thank you Erica, from Kelly and I we are super thankful and wish you the best for the future!

Erica truly made our wedding ONE of a kind! She played so beautifully that we still have guests post wedding day, complimenting how wonderful her music was. Moreover, she is great at communication and was super accommodating to all of our music request. So grateful to have had you playing for us, thank you.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

I'm a very expressive performer and love interacting with my audiences where possible.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I've performed in a huge range of venues including the Usher Hall, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, Symphony Hall, St Giles Cathedral, and many more!

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

I listen to a huge and eclectic range of artists, including classical musicians, folk musicians, pop, rock, film, jazz- everything!

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

I've performed in the BBC Proms, at the launch of Pilgrim Harps' Wave Collection, for the managers of the Women's Euros 2022, and in Scottish Parliament.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I always aim to be flexible to ensure everything runs smoothly for you. If there is a change to your event timings, just let me know.

How much time do you need to set up?

I aim to arrive at a venue at least 1 hour before my start time in order to set up. If you believe there may be an issue accessing your venue at this time, please let me know.

Is the transport of your harp included in your quote?

Yes- for venues closer to my home base, I may not charge travel costs, but further afield there will be a travel charge included.

Do you need any equipment provided to play outdoors?

None at all- my instrument is acoustic. If the weather is poor I will require full cover or a back-up venue to protect it from the elements, including stdirect sunlight, but otherwise there are no issues to performing outside. Please advise me before booking if your event is likely to be outside. I only offer outdoor performances between April and September.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

The set list is a list of what I currently have music for, either because it is standard rep or because it has been specifically requested in the past. I'm always more than happy to work with you to create the best atmosphere for your event.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Absolutely! I'm always happy to source or arrange new music for clients; if there is a large volume of new pieces requested I may charge, but generally offer this service for free. I normally request a minimum of two months to allow for sourcing/ arranging and learning; however, please don't be discouraged from asking if yours is a late booking!
