About Ela

Singer
Brighton
Public liability insurance
Verified profile
Lilting Bossa Nova and fun swinging jazz, Ela can be hired solo, or in ensembles.

Ela’s childhood was filled with beautiful music with an accomplished jazz pianist father. She loved the melancholy and rich chord sequences of jazz from the off, making her dad devise child-finger-friendly versions of songs such as Round Midnight for her to learn and play on the piano. She was also drawn to the visual arts and gained a first class degree, which was split down the middle, half music, half fine art! Later she did the dedicated jazz diploma at Chichester college in 2003 where she studied piano and guitar as well as voice. She has been gigging on the Brighton scene ever since. Singing with the rich variety of bands from duos to big bands.

Customer questions

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I’m happy to be flexible and small changes to timings should be fine, just let me know as soon as you can. If the timings are very different then get in touch - we always try to make it work.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

I am happy to play some iPod jazz recordings through my amp when I take breaks. Just let me know if you'd like this.

How much time do you need to set up?

We have a quick set up, usually only takes up about 15 minutes.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Yes please pick any favourite songs from my song list and I’ll include them in my sets. I always include popular ones such as Fly Me To The Moon, Putting On The Ritz, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps, The Girl From ipanema. Then I play it by ear on the day and choose tunes that seem appropriate in response to the individual setting of each event as it happens.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes, we bring everything! We have a small set up, just one amp (I have battery options as well for outdoor settings) and our instruments.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes that is possible. If the song isn’t in my list, there’s a chance I already know it. I’m happy to learn songs if there is enough time before the event.

What do your clients love most about your performances?

People often say how relaxed & happy they feel listening to myself and my bands. They say we’re not stiff or stuffy! Plus they can tell we really love the genre and bring the joy of it to our performances.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

We hired Swing it Ela for our wedding, and couldn’t have been happier. Their music set the perfect tone - sophisticated yet upbeat. They are incredibly talented, and have a great repertoire of songs. In particular, the Brazilian side of our family was impressed by their bossa nova music. Ela was professional, responsive and friendly throughout - a real joy to deal with. Thank you for making our day so magical!

Ela Southgate and her trio have performed twice in the last 9 months at Danny House, an Elizabethan mansion in Sussex. They are so talented and entertaining that we keep wanting to invite them back again. Ela has a soft and hauntingly beautiful voice and she is supported by her talented and amiable guitarist and trombonist. The combination is nostalgic and unforgettable. Please come back soon Ela!

we booked Ela with her lovely trio for our 65th birthday garden party. They were really good and really helped the party go with a swing. Lots of compliments from all our guests . They were just right for either listening to up close or as a background. I would wholeheartedly recommend them
