About Diphonon Duo

Contemporary classical ensemble
Londres
Accordion and viola duo that plays in a varied range of styles (classical, contemporary, tango, baroque...). A unique and special sound mix

Diphonon Duo is a viola and accordion duo formed by Greek viola player Michael Iskas and Iñigo Mikeleiz Berrade, accordionist from Navarra (Spain). Both of them are Master students at the Royal Academy of Music, and decided to create the ensemble in 2016, following common interests after meeting in their course in London. The word "Diphonon" means in Greek "two voices". The combination of accordion and viola, bow and bellows, is not a very usual duo. But they have more similarities than we think, since both instruments are able to keep sound for long time and vary their color and intensity. For string players this possibility is a very interesting item to explore. Even great cello player Mstislav Rostropovich said that "If cellists want to discover the possibilities of the cello, they should play with accordion and not piano". The repertoire performed by Diphonon Duo reaches different styles and ages. From original works for the duo to transcriptions from baroque and classical music. They involve the audience into a time and space journey from the 18th century, with the great German composer Johann Sebastian Bach, to nowadays, being able to appreciate contemporary but very different stylistically pieces from very distant countries such as Argentina, Denmark, Spain or Japan. Diphonon Duo have performed in venues such as China Exchange (London) and Rook Lane Chapel (Frome). They have received coaching from eminent musicians as accordion professor Owen Murray, Raimondas Sviackevičious and Bjarke Mogensen (accordionists), viola professor James Sleigh and violist Garth Knox.
