David Fitzgerald’s career has combined performing, composing & teaching as well as being something of a journey through various musical environments & genres. Following study the Royal Marines School of Music, in Deal, David served as principal flute & saxophone within HM Band of the Royal Marines throughout the world & principally in the Far East. After further years of working within the musical world of popular & world cultures David devoted his time & energy to working with many artists within the Christian Music industry. In 1989, following visits to the islands of Lindisfarne & Iona, he co-founded the musical project IONA, the result of discoveries made into the origins (particularly Celtic ones) of the Christian faith within these Islands. After two hugely successful recordings (‘Iona’ & ‘Book Of Kells’) he left the project & went back to study for a BA (Hons) Music degree & diploma in music performance (at Colchester & Cambridge). During this time of study David focussed two years of this study into the origins & relevance of Liturgical Music & Worship throughout history. He has since undertaken extensive television & recording work and now devotes much of time teaching, adjudicating & directing worship, classical & jazz ensembles. With his Christian faith very much at the centre of his life, David has toured & recorded with many Christian artists & worship leaders over the years, including Graham Kendrick, Ron Kenoly, Don Moen, Noel Richards, Lara Martin, Barry & Batya Segal (Israel), Stuart Townend, Adrian Snell. His highly acclaimed solo projects include ‘Columcille’, ‘Lux Aeterna’, ‘Breath of Heaven’ and ‘God Is Love’. A 4CD box set, entitled ‘In Paradisum’ was released by ICC in 2009. Recently David has been collaborating & recording for a new project with IONA co-founder and friend Dave Bainbridge, called ‘Celestial Fire’ (with whom he has released a number of projects over the years, including ‘The Eye Of The Eagle’ & more recently ‘Life Journey’).
