About Dave Colebourn

A veteran professional saxophonist covering all genres! Energising, infectious performances delivered with friendly professionalism.
Saxophonist
Bristol
Public liability insurance of £1 million

Opportunities to play with luminaries such as Brandon Block and the BBC's Andrew Marston didn't materialise overnight; it's been an amazing rollercoaster to get here! I've been on my music journey since the age of six when I took up the piano, but was powerless to stop myself taking up the saxophone at age fourteen upon discovering funk music, which remains among my favourite genres today. I quickly found affinity with expressing myself on the instrument. During this time I fronted a jazz sextet and played with a couple of district big bands that helped me to start finding my unique voice. Playing a set at the Royal Albert Hall was a serious highlight! While studying at university in south-west England, I managed the university big band for three years, integrated myself for the first time into the improvised music scene there, and moreover took some very influential sax lessons that set me on the path to my future career. As if that wasn’t enough to inspire me to take my saxophone playing further, I was also extremely privileged to meet and receive coaching from the late ‘Pee Wee’ Ellis, arguably one of the greatest saxophonists of his generation. I moved to Bristol in late 2019, and absolutely love it here to this day. Musically speaking, I was just getting started here when a pandemic arrived and cancelled all the gigs! I was thankfully able to use the dark times to my advantage by unleashing… a metric tonne of sax practise! I came out of the pandemic able to achieve feats on the saxophone that I’d only dreamed of just months earlier. In a city like Bristol, the work pays off quickly. Since the reemergence of society I’ve had the privilege of working with an enormous variety of bands, both local and touring, in addition to playing a few different festivals and regularly making my mark on the incredible improvised music scene. Presently, I’m distributing myself between weddings, clubs, parties and corporate events, in addition to local sessions & projects, and also my own solo woodwind project! I'd be extremely hard-pressed to pick a favourite from all of the different styles of music that I play, although I'm in particular demand as an ibiza saxophonist. Why? I live for the energy!!

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

In one word, that would be ENERGY! Most audiences comment in some way that my playing makes them feel 'alive' in that special way that's difficult to put your finger on.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I've really been all over the place in my time! Some of the most prestigious highlights include The Royal Albert Hall, The Bristol Beacon, Bath Forum, the Royal Northern College of Music, and Imperial College London. I've recently most enjoyed picturesque venues such at Gara Rock hotel (Salcombe), The Mumbles Pier (Swansea) and the Gherkin (London)!

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

I've been inspired by a huge variety of saxophonists and other musicians over the last decade, although my strongest recent influence has to be Shabaka Hutchings! His work with "The Comet is Coming" is stellar, and something I aspire to replicate one day.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

That would definitely be a showcase at the Royal Albert Hall! A big band set to an audience of over 2000 minors and accompanying guardians, including some solo features.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

Simply drop me a mesage with your updated event timings; it's extremely likely that I'll still be able to perform for you!

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, absolutely! You can request this during a phone or text consultation. An iPod service is a available between sets free of charge. A service before or after the timings of my performance would incur a modest additional charge, depending on the duration(s) you had in mind.

How much time do you need to set up?

This will depend on the performance setup that you'd like me to bring, but overall not too long! Here are some common examples: - Wireless mic to plug into DJ desk or other PA system: 15 mins - Wireless mic to plug into my own PA system: 25mins - Microphone through pedalboard into PA: 30mins

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Yes, you're welcome to choose as many or as few songs from my song list to be performed as you'd like.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes! If there is no PA at your venue, I can provide a battery powered, portable PA myself. Though unsuitable for the largest of venues, it will easily cover a moderately sized room or outdoor space.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

Yes, I can absolutely do this given some time to prepare. A minimum of 3 bespoke songs are available for you to request free of charge, provided I can get at least a weeks notice to learn them. You may be able to ask for more depending on the style of music you're after! Please do ask about this.

Dave was absolutely AMAZING !! From first booking, he contacted me to ask for my music choice and gave me the option of choosing five extra songs which he would learn prior to playing at the Hen Do (he then learnt these in a week). Dave then arrived along with all of his equipment and gorgeous saxophone and put on an incredible performance leaving 24 girls on a hen do and the bride absolutely speechless!! Thank you so much Dave for your professional and spectacular performance! I 100% recommend and will DEFINITELY be using Dave again in the near future!!

Dave was just brilliant, played along with the DJ without requesting any song, the best part was seeing him playing in the middle of the crowd, will definitely book him for another night.
