About Dan

Clarinettist
Oxford

Dan Mort is a 5th year medic at Wadham College, Oxford. He has been playing the clarinet since he was 7, learning with Luan Shaw, Keith Slade, Timothy Orpen, and now Angela Malsbury. During his teenage years, as well as achieving Grade 8 Distinction and DipABRSM at ages 14 and 16, respectively, he was a member of numerous local and national orchestras, including National Youth Orchestra, CBSO Youth Orchestra, National Children’s Orchestra, and the Academy Chamber Orchestra in the West Midlands, with whom he performed Weber’s 2nd Clarinet Concerto in 2010. Dan currently plays with many university-based ensembles, including Oxford University Orchestra, OUSinfonietta, and several chamber groups. In 2014, Dan won 2nd place overall at the Chandos Young Musician of the Year competition, and in 2015 won the Oxford University Philharmonia’s concerto competition, subsequently performing Copland’s Clarinet Concerto with the orchestra in 2015. He looks forward to performing the Copland again with St Peter's Chamber Orchestra in June 2016. Dan also loves jazz/funk drumming (attaining a Trinity/Guildhall Performance Diploma in 2011), and holds the drum seat in Dot’s Funk Odyssey, a party band which performs extensively on the university gig and ball circuits, in addition to playing small group jazz gigs and serving on the worship team at St. Aldates Church, Oxford.
