About Corwin Zekley

Internationally touring Violinist/Fiddler with diverse roots, from traditional Irish tunes, to singing & playing classic Jazz songs.
Violinist
London

Quickly gaining recognition as one of the fieriest fiddlers of their generation, Corwin performs and composes in a multiplicity of styles ranging from Hot-Club Swing to Celtic to Folk and beyond. Corwin was born into Mastery— they had a violin in their hands as soon as they could walk and talk, and the world music camps and festivals where they spent their childhood helped shape them into the eclectic & eccentric artist they are today. To Corwin, music has always been the greatest form of connection and communication, both with the listener as much as with other players. Corwin uses the ineffability of music as both a completion of self, and as a vehicle for expressing what words cannot, and this shows in their energetic, emotional and passionate performances. Corwin's 2018 graduation from the Berklee College of Music with a degree in songwriting only furthered their relentless growth into the virtuoso they are today. Corwin has played over a thousand shows, ranging from on the street to at festivals, and from wedding ceremonies to dance parties. Most recently, Corwin has been on an 11 week European tour with their band, playing over 60 shows in 6 countries. Corwin has also taught music for over a decade, working with students of all ages and levels. Corwin's teaching style is all about positive reinforcement, and taking whatever the student is the most interested in, and figuring out how to use that as the vehicle for teaching them the instrument. Corwin teaches anything from the basics of fiddle/violin, to discovering one's artistic voice, learning to improvise, music theory, or even how to sing and play one's favorite songs.

“Corwin Zekley is an exceptional musician both in the studio and when playing live. I hired him as support for a major musical showcase event in Leeds and not only did he excel as a support act, but he also effortlessly sat in with my band “The Heartache” in a sold out show headlined by international artist Jon Gomm, after one simple rehearsal. Those watching would have thought he’d been in the band for years! The audience loved his playing and he wonderfully engaged the room. In the studio he’s has both the technical skills but also the listening ear to always deliver a exactly what is needed to enhance any track, from a lifelong dedication to music.” Nick Cody Head of Green Eyed Records and promoter for Music for the Head & Heart music showcases

Corwin Zekley is one of the greatest musicians I have ever had the honor of working with. They transcend violin virtuosity because they are more than a virtuoso—theyʼre an incredible songwriter, lyricist, arranger, and over all empathetic person. Because they have such a vast array of skills, theyʼre able to pull from a range of influences to deliver exactly what's needed to a song. It isnʼt just “fiddle music” or “classical music” to them—music is music. For example, with my song “If There Ainʼt A Heaven,” I wanted a sweeping orchestral feel— something “old Hollywood.” Something that sounded grandiose and timeless. Corwinʼs answer to that was to pull out all the stops and layer violin over violin until they had effectively arranged a twelve-piece string section to go underneath everything. It created an enormous bed on which the rest of the overdubs could sit, all with one violin. I've worked with Corwin for a long time now, since we were both at music school, and I think the thing that separates them from your average violinist is not only what to play, but what not to play. I know that's somewhat of a cliche when giving a musician praise these days, but itʼs 100% true when talking about Corwin. They have a background in songwriting and genuine appreciation for all elements of music, and that informs their decisions while playing. On another song of mine, “Most Of The Time,” I wrote it with the understanding that at the end, there would be a violin solo. I had the guitars tracked, background vocals tracked, a few overdubs, but overall, I tried to leave as much space as possible before Corwin tracked their parts, because I didnʼt know the direction weʼd go with it. What ended up happening is something I truly cannot believe is on my record. Not only is it one of the best violin solos Iʼve ever heard, itʼs one of the greatest solos of all time. They turned this two-dimensional road I had laid out into a three-dimensional stained glass bridge that arced with the gracefulness of royalty. Wow. Words canʼt do it justice. So finally, that begs the question: where do good ideas come from? I canʼt answer that, but I can say that weʼre all a mosaic of our influences. The more diverse your influences are, the more creative ideas youʼll have. I think the thing that makes Corwin the most unique, the most ingenious, is their compilation of inspirations and their intuitive way of blending it all together. - Luke Frees

Studio Work
I have tracked fiddle/strings for hundreds of people's projects, and am the perfect fit for recording in person or remotely for yours. Whether it be a shredding fiddle solo, textural ambient accompaniment, chunky chords, or overdubbed orchestral style strings, I can raise up or bring depth to any song/track. My rates for recording and sending you parts from my at home studio are generally £100 per song, and include revisions, learning parts, or composing my own.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

What people love most about my performance is the cheerful and lighthearted energy I bring to it, and how I share it with and connect to the crowds through the music I play.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

1000s collectively of bars, pubs, theaters, house concerts, festivals, restaurants, weddings and private events.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

For my Hot Club Jazz playing, primarily Stéphane Grappelli and Jason Annick. For the Celtic and other world musics I play, primarily from people I have played with and learned from at camps and world music festivals.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Several festivals with 1000s of attendants in California (Railroad Square Music Festival, Rivertown Revival Fest) and some other festivals around the states. The biggest collection of work I've done was a 10 week long 60 show 6 country European tour in spring of 2022.

Do you have different line-up options?

My partner Grace is a Singer and Pianist/Guitarist and we can do a variety of covers, and original music. Also we play traditional contra dance and waltz music and could play for a traditional music dance event. We also have a bass player and drummer available for bigger band events.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

Case by case, but usually a small change shouldn't be an issue. Just keep me in the loop!

How much time do you need to set up?

15 minutes. I don't have a P.A but have light amplification for my violin if necessary.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Sure, if you know any of the traditional tunes/jazz songs I play you're more than welcome to tell me which.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes, unless it's for a louder reception where heavier amplification would be necessary. Any acoustic violin or light amplification I can cover.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes! I will learn one song for a wedding ceremony. If there are more requests, depending on the difficulty of them, I may request compensation for my time to learn them
