London

Daniel Shao Flute - William Ball Oboe - Craig McClaren Clarinet - Hannah Rankin Bassoon - Frances Leith Horn. Founded in 2017, the Coriolis Quintet met as postgraduate students at the Royal Academy of Music. Embarking on freelance careers, the group formed with the ambition of continuing high quality chamber playing, exploring new repertoire and performing in a variety of settings. Since then, the ensemble has developed a busy schedule, playing in such venues as St Marylebone Church as part of the Wigmore Hall’s Music For The Moment series, St John’s Waterloo and the Faversham Assembly Rooms. They have recorded a number of pieces from their repertoire and were thrilled to be part of Hannah Peel’s ‘Standing on the Roof of the World’ video for Spitfire Audio Most recently, the Coriolis Quintet are excited to have joined Live Music Now’s newest crop of ensembles for 2019, performing in care homes, schools and hospitals and receiving training in participatory performance. All members currently pursue active solo and orchestral performance careers alongside their chamber work. The players’ combined experience includes work with the Philharmonia Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Sinfonia Cymru, The Lion King West End, St Petersburg Ballet Theatre, European Union Youth Orchestra and training with the Britten-Pears Orchestra, Lucerne Festival Academy, and LSO Academy. Individually, they have won accolades such as the Wind Finalist of BBC Young Musician of the Year, the Lions Club prize at the Barbirolli International Oboe Competition, and the Countess of Munster Award. Their education and creative work has taken them to the Wigmore Hall working with people living with dementia, English Touring Opera in schools, BBC Proms extra family events and St Martin-in-the-fields working with the homeless. They are very much looking forward to broadening this experience as an ensemble with Live Music Now. The name ‘Coriolis’ describes the effect of the earth’s rotation on wind direction in the northern and southern hemispheres.
