Organist
Edinburgh

With 15 years’ experience playing and teaching organ and piano, my calling in life has always been drawn to music. And over the years I have developed a real drive to be able to share my passion, knowledge and skills that I have with others. Alongside my current post I currently have several private students who I teach piano, organ and vocal skills. I also previously ran a children’s choir in Edinburgh aged between 6 – 15 years of age. I am fully comprehensive in organ, piano, music theory, conducting, and composition, in both classical and popular music. I am extremely driven, hardworking and passionate about both performing and teaching music. My background in music is varied. I originally trained as an electric guitarist and completed a HND in popular music. Whilst at college I became increasingly interested in Baroque music. After 2 years of study, I was awarded a place at the University of Aberdeen. Where I studied piano and organ under Professor David J. Smith and Rodger B. Williams. And during my travels I have also had the pleasure of attending master classes with James O’Donnell, Sietze de Vries and Johann Vexo on performance style and improvisation.

Christopher Black played the organ for the Sunday Evening Mass services at the Annunciation Roman Catholic Church in Chesterfield, and consistently delighted the congregation (of around 150 people per mass) with both his hymn accompaniment style and his preludes, postludes and improvisations. The congregation sang well and enthusiastically as they were encouraged by Chris’ sensitive choice of stops and steady tempo. Chris is a gifted organist and able both to perform a wide variety of styles of composed music, and to improvise on a theme to fill a gap in a service, painting a well-judged mood with sound.

Whilst in Chesterfield Chris played for funerals and weddings He is punctual, reliable, amiable and talented. sympathetic to both the instrument and the occasion. He doesn't get flustered and improvises well if needed. Father Steven - Saint Peter's Church Calow
