Carolyn Ronning is an American born cellist studying on full scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England. She currently studies with Professor Josephine Knight (Alfred Piatti Chair of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music). Carolyn is passionate about chamber music and has performed in masterclasses and concerts as a chamber musician in the US, England, and China. Recent engagements include performing at the Duke’s Hall, International Piano festival London, UK; Jesus College, Cambridge; Clare College, Cambridge, Great Wall Soloists Beijing Concert Hall, NPR Show 258 and 259 at Central Conservatory Recording Studios; and appearing in the Kettles Yard Recital Series twice. In the recent past and first academic year at Royal Academy of Music, Carolyn has consolidated a great amount of technique as well as studied at the Great Wall International Music Academy (GWIMA) in Beijing, China, Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, taken private lessons with Sharon Robinson of Cleveland Institute of Music and Jacobs School of Music - Indiana University, Susan Moses of Jacobs School of Music, and studied 5 years with Dr. William Grubb of the Jordan Fine Arts College, Indianapolis. In 2013, Carolyn made her international debut soloing on National Public Radio’s show From the Top with host and pianist Christopher O’Riley in Beijing, China. Also, being a member of the New World Youth Symphony Orchestra for 6 years, she was seated principal cellist in 2012. Recent awards include 25% Scholarship to return to GWIMA, a $30,000 scholarship to study with Alan Harris at Eastman School of Music 2013, as well as 3rd Prize in the Great Wall International Cello Competition Beijing, China, 2rd Prize Fort Wayne Philharmonic Concerto Competition, and 3rd Prize Kokomo String Competition. She also earned entrance to 6 Music Conservatories in 2013.
Future engagements include studying March - April 2015 with Georg Pedersen of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, as well as attending and performing at one of several offers to music festivals in the States, of which she has yet to decide. Carolyn plans to earn a MA and PHD, and aspires to teach at the conservatory level, but also has a strong belief in educating and inspiring youth around the world, especially those who would not normally have the chance to go to the symphony or learn a classical instrument. She is passionate about charity and community work, and would love to see a growth in the prosperity of classical music among young people in America.
