Calum graduated from Durham University in June 2012 with a 2:1 degree, having been awarded Durham University Student of the Year award. His conducting experience to date has been varied and distinguished, conducting a wide number of ensembles and genres. While at Durham, Calum has conducted the University Symphony and Chamber orchestras, the Opera Ensemble, Hild-Bede Chapel Choir, and Durham Sinfonietta (withwhom he also appeared as concerto soloist). Highlights have included tours toBarcelona, Venice and Vienna; conductingthe premiere of Stanford’s second violinconcerto with Rupert Marshal-Luck; andconducting Dame Gillian Weir in concert. Having founded the Edinburgh Incidental Orchestra in 2009, Calum has conducted a great deal of music with them, and has expanded the organisation to include a choir. Projects with this diverse and exciting ensemble are varied and take place during winter and summer holidays. This has regularly involved the commissioning of various works from other young composers, which particularly interests Calum. Last year, Calum worked for Durham University as Music Co-ordinator, conducting the University Chamber Choir and Symphony Orchestra. This also involved a close collaboration with renowned opera singer Sir Thomas Allen, whom Calum conducted in Vaughan William’s Mystical Songs in a concert in Durham Cathedral. While in Durham, Calum was a mentor for a group of undergraduates as well as having the honour of being appointed to two Senior Common Rooms, in Hild-Bede and University Colleges. He also worked as the Chaplaincy Assistant of the College of Ss. Hild and Bede. Calum studies conducting with Prof. Colin Metters at the Royal Academy of Music, Prof. Peter Stark at Royal College of Music, and Prof. Alasdair Mitchell at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
