Calvin began his musical training at the age of 12 when he began studying the guitar. Within the first year he was playing gigs around Liverpool to small audiences playing his original music. Inspired to continue studying music, Calvin studied academically at GCSE, A level and eventually degree level at Leeds College of Music where he was awarded a BA (hons) 1st degree after three years of study.
Exposed to a wide range of music from a young age, Calvin's playing began rooted in blues but quickly expanded as he became interested in Jazz and Fusion in his teens. Since completing his degree, Calvin has remained resident in Leeds, playing and composing for a wide range of projects covering a range of styles.
As a member of Electronic/Jazz three piece 'Stretch Trio', Calvin had the opportunity to perform at the 'Gateshead international Jazz festival' early in 2014 as part of the 'Jazz North Introduces' award, this high profile performance saw him sharing the bill with artists such as Bill Frisell, Esperanza Spaulding, Jack Dejohnette, Polar Bear and Jean Touisant.
In December that year, following the release of the groups debut album 'Antithesis' the trio won the prestigious Peter Whittingham Award, they faced a panel of experts including trombonist Dennis Rollins, saxophonist Pete Wareham, and Justin McKenzie of London promoter Jazz re:freshed. The group, were the unanimous choice to receive the £4,000 development award through Help Musicians UK.
Alongside 'Stretch trio' Calvin also composes for his own trio, the 'Calvin Travers Trio', which blends contemporary Jazz with an Americana, roots style. He also writes and produces his own music for Synchronization, Film and other Media projects.
He performs solo, as part of guitar duo 'Trading 8s' and also with many other bands covering Pop, Rock, R&B and Jazz styles.
