Singer (soprano)
Luton

Bryony Burnham is a soprano based in Luton, Bedfordshire. She has recently graduated from the University of Birmingham, achieving a first in vocal performance. During her education, Bryony spent a year in the United States, studying vocal performance at the University of North Texas. Bryony has been the recipient of a number of scholarships and has received generous financial support from the West Bequest fund, the Gateway Bursary and the Luton Rotary Youth Trust. She is an active performer in Bedfordshire, London and Birmingham and has performed in venues across the UK, Italy and the USA. During her time at the University of Birmingham, Bryony Burnham was under the tutelage of countertenor, Mark Chambers. In her final year at Birmingham, she was in the University of Birmingham’s Women’s Choir and was under the baton of leading choral conductor, Simon Halsey. During this time she received coaching from tenor Andrew King and took part in a number of masterclasses. This included working with mezzo-soprano Wendy Dawn Thompson and Erin Headley’s award-winning ensemble, Atalante. After spending the first seven years of her career as a mezzo-soprano, Bryony has recently changed to soprano. She has been studying privately with Susan Waters and coaching with Christopher Gould, who have been guiding her through this transition. Up until now, Bryony has performed a vast variety of mezzo-soprano roles including: Nicklausse The Tales of Hoffmann (Harrow Opera), Hansel Hansel and Gretel (St Albans Chamber Opera), Nancy Albert Herring (University of Birmingham Summer Festival Opera), Dido Dido and Aeneas (Wilmore Singers), Phoebe Yeomen of the Guard (University of Birmingham Gilbert and Sullivan Society), Second Lady The Magic Flute (Bedfordshire Youth Opera), Zita Gianni Schicchi (The Amalfi Coast Festival of Music) and Fifth spirit Cendrillon (University of North Texas Opera). Bryony has also performed as the soloist in a number of vocal works including: Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Handel’s Messiah, Respighi’s Il tramonto, Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Britten’s Phaedra. During her time at university, Bryony Burnham won the University of Birmingham concerto competition and performed Britten's Phaedra with the University of Birmingham Summer Festival Sinfonia. Recently, Bryony made her debut at Cadogan Hall, London, where she was invited to perform as the Soprano II soloist in Bach's Magnificat with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

I have had the pleasure of working with Bryony on a number of occasions. Not only does Bryony have an exceptional talent but she is a fabulous and positive presence at rehearsal, always prepared, and always generous with her knowledge and expertise when working with less experienced musicians. Bryony is a well-rounded performer with great emotional depth and a thoughtful and intelligent performance technique, she is an independent singer but responds well to direction, musical and dramatic, and is always flexible and adaptable.
