About JazzLife

A dynamic quartet with a tightly honed set of Swing, Latin and funky numbers to provide the feel good factor for any event
Jazz band
Edinburgh
Public liability insurance of £10 million
Verified profile

With their roots firmly in jazz, the band’s repertoire is a tightly honed mix of Swing and Latin, rounded off with their ‘twisted standards’ - unique arrangements of well-known tunes with funky makeovers, added reggae grooves and more. Prepare for a musical treat and enjoy the feel-good factor as the band take a fresh look at The Great American Songbook. Vocalist Elaine Crighton has been cultivating a name for herself on the Scottish Jazz scene these last few years. From her origins in the North East of Scotland she has now performed widely across the country putting an indelible stamp on modern jazz, vocalising and bringing out the best that The Great American Songbook has to offer. While studying on a 3 year Jazz Programme at St Andrews University Elaine was the recipient of the Linda Trahan award for Outstanding Performance in 2016. An ever popular presence on the Scottish Jazz Scene she has helped to grow the Garioch Jazz Club and is the driving force behind the Inverurie Jazz Festival too. She has jazz running through her core and the Scottish Jazz Scene is all the better for it. Working with various musicians from Aberdeenshire, Glasgow and Edinburgh the full quintet performs an eclectic mix of classic swing pieces alongside cool arrangements of Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis tunes and Latin standards, many sung with original Portuguese lyrics. Elaine’s repertoire is vast and varied. Elaine can be booked as a Duo, Trio, Quartet, Quintet or Sextet. Accustomed to playing restaurant gigs, pubs, and small venues, the band have the ability to sensitively read the audience and vary the intensity and material accordingly. Also playing in larger jazz clubs, for parties and music festivals gives them the chance to cut loose with some original arrangements of well known tunes.

Wonderful and creative set from Elaine Crighton. Beautiful voice, dealing with an array of styles and supported by an excellent band. Elaine’s stories and facts between songs engaged effectively with the audience and it’s always a bonus to learn about the lyrics or history of a tune. A very enjoyable evening listening to a great performer.

“Elaine performed at our Inkwell Divas jazz series in Chapel Allerton Leeds last year. We think Elaine is one of Scotland's treasures - and a true up and coming jazz vocalist. She has charisma and flair but she has also travelled to study the art of jazz singing with some of the UK's top singers and educators and taken the jazz course at St Andrews - and it shows in her singing style - she can improvise and scat with a passion!” Steve Crocker, organiser JazzLeeds
