About Bob

An experienced saxophonist (tenor, alto, soprano, baritone) and flute player, working in jazz and swing, classical and pop music.
Saxophonist
Ballyforan

Full time professional saxophonist since 2008, specializing in top class jazz and swing background music for wedding drinks receptions (champagne receptions). The music is always entertaining and tasteful, and never too loud - guests can choose to listen or chat. Many of the tunes are familiar to non-specialists. Bob usually includes a few bossa nova numbers such as The Girl from Ipanema, for a nice change of pace. He can also include classic pop and rock tunes if requested. The theme of the show is always love and happiness - we don't want to be singing the blues on a special day, so heartache and misery are banned! Bob has an extensive range of top class backing tracks carefully selected to suit the occasion. He is happy to discuss song choices ahead of the day and include your personal favourites whenever possible. If you prefer to leave it in his capable hands, he will make a playlist for you based on his knowledge and experience. Bob uses a small P.A. system (Yamaha StagePas 300 at the time of writing) to play backing tracks. In most settings, the sax doesn't need amplification. Power requirements are an ordinary plug socket. Weather permitting, he can perform outside in summer months. For outside work, he uses a small combo amp. A plan B for rain is sometimes a good idea!

Great fun at Robert's 60th birthday party. His family and friends came to have fun, and they surely did! They made me very welcome, and their DJ, Stephen Grogan, was a dream to work with. Thank you so much for booking me!

So so. Music was very mediocre and it felt like he was doing us a favour to be there.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

My customers like that I play songs that they have requested. It helps make the event special for them. They also like that I play at a moderate background level for drinks receptions and meals, so that they can chat easily as well as listen.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I've played all over Ireland in hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and bars. I've also played a couple of memorable gigs on canal and river boats!

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

I listen to most of the jazz greats, particularly saxophonists such as Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. I love the BlueNote era of jazz from the 50s and 60s when jazz was very accessible and groovy. My guilty pleasure is classic soul music especially Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

I've played in many fine wedding venues, including Markree Castle in Sligo, and Castle Leslie in Monahan. I appeared briefly in the RTE series "What Woman Want", presented by Maia Dunphy, playing saxophone at a wedding fair in Tullamore. To me, all my wedding engagements are high profile and top priority!

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I'm happy to adjust start and finish times slightly, providing we can stick to the agreed length of the performance. Lips get tired on very long gigs!

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

I can provide pre-recorded background music, but I don't offer a DJ service

How much time do you need to set up?

It takes me about 30 minutes to set up and run a quick level check.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

I'm happy to discuss song choice with you in as much or as little detail as you like. I'm very experienced and have a good idea of what guests will enjoy, but I'm open to personalizing the set list for you as much as possible.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

I bring my own 300 watt PA system. It is big enough for background music such as a drinks reception or a meal.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

Given notice, I can learn tunes or songs fairly easily. If I can find a backing track, or if the song lends itself to an unaccompanied performance, I'm happy to do it.
