Our repertoire consists of a selection of our favourite dance tunes from the North East of England, Scotland, Canada and New England, as well as original compositions. About the Band: Rachael (fiddle and caller) is a graduate of the Folk and Traditional Music Degree at Newcastle University, where she first fell in love with playing for ceilidh dancing. She's been playing for ceilidhs for 16 years and is in demand as a caller, performer and tutor throughout the North East. Robin (fiddle and caller) is one of the North East's most well known and experienced band leaders. He began performing in his teenage years in rock and roll bands, but he found his musical home in the world of ceilidh dancing. Robin has over 40 years of calling and playing experience under his belt, and is known for his humour and expertise in all things ceilidh. Richard (button accordion) is an exciting and dynamic performer with an innate feel for dance music. He has been playing accordion since the age of 15, and over the last 30 years he's played with many bands around the North East, building up a huge wealth of experience in playing for ceilidh dancing. Phil (guitar and fiddle) is a multi-instrumentalist and is much in demand on the local folk scene. He can turn his hand to almost any instrument, and his rock-steady rhythm combined with a deep-rooted understanding of traditional music makes him a highly skilled ceilidh musician with over 30 years of experience in playing for dancing. Please refer to our price guide and packages for our most popular options. We offer packages for 1 hour, 2 hour and 3 hour ceilidhs. We had the Blue Hat Ceilidh band for my 60th birthday. They were fantastic! They were very good at explaining the dances and getting everyone involved and choose dances to suit the experience level. They were also flexible on timing as we needed up starting late. I would thoroughly recommend them!

Thank you Sarah, it was a pleasure to meet you all and we had a great time too. It's been a long time since we had the dance floor filled so quickly on announcing the first dance! Wishing you and your guests all the best

They were great! We were a crowd of absolute novices aged 3 to 95 and they had us all dancing throughout the 2 sets. Not always together. Not always correctly but everyone had a great time! Lovely people to deal with too! Would definitely book them again.

I definitely recommend Blue Hat Band to anyone looking for a ceilidh band. Rachael replied to my enquiry promptly, providing all of the information that I needed, and being clear about what she needed in return. She was professional but friendly. It was reassuring that she had booking forms and terms/conditions that were clear and fair. I felt reassured that things would be handled properly. She gave us plenty of opportunity to make requests, and tailored their performance to the needs of the event. On the night they arrived on time, had everything they needed, were a pleasure to deal with throughout, managing with lots of beginners and a big age range! Definitely 5 star and I'd book again for sure! Thanks Rachael and the rest of the band!

I booked the Blue Hat Ceilidh Band for my parents Golden Wedding Anniversary and they were fantastic. Rachael took the time to ask about the event, who would likely be attending and numbers, this meant the band were ready with the right dance for the group. Wonderful caller even though we didn’t quite follow instructions 🙈 everyone had so much fun and my parents were delighted. Would definitely recommend - thank you for making their evening.

Customer questions

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

We regularly perform at venues across the North East of England and further afield. We frequently play at popular wedding & event venues including Newton Hall, the Alnwick Garden, Ellingham Hall, Horton Grange, The Wildings and the Derwent Manor Hotel. We are equally at home playing in village halls, community centre, church halls, school halls and marquees

Do you have different line-up options?

Our standard line up is 2 fiddles, button accordion and guitar. This may vary depending on availability of musicians and we may use substitute musicians from our pool of highly experienced deps where appropriate. We may be able to accommodate requests for alternative line-up options, such as adding a piano or other instrument, for an additional charge.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We fully understand that you may not have timings firmed up at the time of booking. Please give us an indication of timings as best you can at this stage, and we'll be in touch nearer the time to confirm details. Small changes in timings can usually be accommodated without any issue.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

You are very welcome to plug your device into our PA system to play background music between sets, or to play the first dance for your wedding, for no additional charge. If you'd like to use our PA system outside of the time that we would be set up anyway, this would incur an additional charge.

How much time do you need to set up?

We need 45 minutes to set up and sound check in advance of starting to play. If you need us to be set up earlier than our start time - e.g. to accommodate the cutting of the cake/first dance happening in the same room - we can arrive earlier to accommodate this. If set-up is required significantly before our start time this will incur an additional charge.

Do you provide a caller?

Yes, we always provide a highly experienced caller as part of our ceilidh band. If you don't need a caller for your event please let us know at time of booking.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

We're always happy to take requests for specific dances that you'd like to be done at your event. Our song list shows many of the popular ceilidh dances that we regularly call at our ceilidhs, but if your favourite isn't on their please do ask, as the list is not exhaustive. If you have a favourite folk tune you would like to hear at your event, please ask.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA) included in your quote?

Yes, we provide all of our own PA system. All we need on the night is access to a plug socket, and 4 chairs. If your venue would prefer us to use their sound system, please let us know at time of booking so that we can liaise with the venue.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

If there is a specific dance or tune you'd like to have at your event, please do ask - if we can do it, we will! Requests that require significant rehearsal time for us may incur an additional charge.
