About Blag

Blag play a feisty mix of groovesome Irish Folk Rock, Ceildhi & World music. Fun & lively Blag have played festivals, TV and Radio.
Celtic folk band
London
Public liability insurance of £10 million

Blag play a variety of Celtic and World music, from Irish Ballads and Scottish Jigs to Flamenco and Gypsy Jazz. They perform in festivals throughout Europe. All the musicians are professionals that have trained at music college, made records and have performed on T.V. and radio, including 'Loose Ends' on Radio 4. Michael Pinsky started playing the fiddle at six. He has played in folk groups in Scotland from the age of 11 who’s members have become players in leading Scottish bands such a ‘Capercaille’ and ‘Shoogleniffty’ and with leading jazz players such a Courtney Pine in the ‘Grand Union Orchestra’. His ability to play both folk and jazz creates a unique fiddle style. He is the Band's dance caller and moves into the audience to teach the dances before calling them from the stage whilst playing the fiddle. David Morgan played acoustic guitar with ‘Golage’, in Brighton, which later formed ‘Stomp’ an extremely successful percussion, performance group that have toured the world, playing on Broadway in New York and the Royal Festival Hall in London. His vast range of techniques, from bluegrass fingerpicking to a driving syncopated Irish rhythm style gives a rich harmony to Blag repertoire. Ade Harris was a member of the influential punk group ‘Peter and the Test Tube Babies’. His playing provides the power-house behind the Blag sound. Blag are based in London. The band regularly plays Balls, Weddings, Parties and Corporate Events. James Whale exclaimed when he heard us that “Blag play the most eclectic mix of music I have ever heard” on Drive Time LCB 97.3 Ned Sherrin commented that "Blag have been delighting audiences with their feisty mix gypsy jazz and groovesome celtic folk" on Loose Ends Radio 4 when we played a surprise song for Melvyn Bragg. Danny Godfrey, music organiser for the Queen's College (Cambridge) May Ball wrote; "Blag's music was irresistibly danceable. Their energetic and extremely skilled performance created a highly festive air. Their interpretations of folk music were as original as it was entertaining. I would not hesitate in recommending this hugely professional band."

Blag provided a brilliant service. I spoke to them a few days before to confirm some details. There were punctual and set up without any problems. They had a great rapport with the guests and read the room brilliantly as to the pace needed for the evening. There was a good variety of music played and they are very proficient musicians. I would highly recommend them to anyone wanting a fabulous evening’s entertainment.

Dear Julie Thanks so much for your review. We really enjoyed the evening. Everybody picked up the dances incredibly fast and they were a real pleasure to teach. It was also lovely to hear your beautiful voice, we should have really played a song together! Something for your next anniversary.... With best wishes Michael, Dave and Paul.

Blag Band were amazing! we booked them for St Patrick's Day at Big Chill Bar in King's Cross and they certainly got the crowd on their feet dancing, they brought a lot of fun to our venue! Michael communicated really well prior to the event and they were really easy to work with! we will definitely keep them in mind for future events.

Lovely guys but out of tune and failed to get anyone up dancing

Dear Natalie, Thanks so much for booking us. We think you were downstairs whilst we were, playing, the gig was mid-afternoon and people were eating lunch, but they did start to dance towards the end of the event at around 6pm. The most popular dancing tunes were slow waltzes which is not our speciality, although we do have a few tunes that cover this. Many people approached us to say they loved the music, including a couple who were musicians. Several asked for cards to book us for events later in the year. I am not sure about the comment about being out of tune, this is not feedback we have had before and is certainly a surprising comment.

Hired Blag for a ceilidh in South London a couple of weeks ago. They were fantastic. Being in a ceilidh band myself, the band were exactly what we were looking for and more than lived up to expectations! They played a good mix of well known ceilidh dances and threw in a couple of songs as well to get the crowd going. Explained the dances well to a large group that had varying ceilidh experience and everyone had a great time. Would definitely hire again!

We'd definitely recommend the Blag band, our friends and family really enjoyed themselves. Many times over I was asked how I discovered them, and repeatedly told how great they were. Everything was 5*, good communication, prompt, professional, fun and so great at what they do. Our one regret is that the hours flew by and we could have happily indulged in another set.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

We are dynamic band, using wireless pickups to move through audience whilst we play. Expect unique spins on classics, blending reggae and funk into traditional tunes. Immerse yourself in a vibrant, unforgettable musical experience!

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Almost every venue in and around London, from Westminster, to small Irish pubs in Kilburn. We have played an number of festivals in Europe also.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Waterboys, Van Morrison, Shooglenifty, Stéphane Grappelli, Afro Celt Sound System, The Police, José Antonio Rodríguez, the list is endless.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

We have played several times on radio and TV, including being featured on Loose Ends. We have played for a major Microsoft party in Bali, Indonesia, the Home Office, several Lords and Ladies, Ealing Studios, and for the London Philharmonic Orchestra (that was truly nerve-wracking!) Please refer to our reviews.

Do you have different line-up options?

We do also play as a duo, but we prefer to play as the full band which is Vocal, Guitar, Fiddle and Drums. When playing for a Ceildhi, the fiddle player teaches and calls the dances.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We always try our best to be flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let us know.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Absolutely. This is a really popular request and we actually offer this service for free. If you'd like a DJ service via our PA after the final set until the venue closes, we provide this for an additional £100.

How much time do you need to set up?

We usually set up about 1 hour before the performance time. As soon as our PA is set up we can provide a free playlist service to help set the atmosphere and get your guests ready for our live performance!

Can you roam around while you perform?

Yes, we often roam about, its hard to keep us on the stage! - we either perform acoustically or with wireless microphones attached to our instruments so we can move around freely. Whilst calling the fiddle player has a radio headset that allows him to teach from within the audience.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Our set lists are crafted from countless performances and learning what works best to ensure guests dance and have an amazing time. However, we're definitely happy to chat through and make sure we find what works for your event.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

Our PA and lighting system is included in your quote. We usually require a minimum of 4m (width) by 2m (depth) to perform, the main issue is the depth of stage, so the drummer doesn't fall off, or the bass drum descends into the audience, this has happened before!!

Can you learn song requests before the event?

If a song isn't included in our song list there may still be a chance we already know it. If there is a special song you'd like us to learn we are happy to do this for you. There is a fee of £100 for this service to take into account rehearsal times etc.
