About Black Velvet Ceilidh Trio

Versatile professional musicians and a fun caller offer a superb barn dance, Scottish ceilidh, Irish ceili or American Hoedown.

If you’re looking for a superb wedding Ceilidh, Barn Dance, an Irish Ceili – or even an American Hoedown, this is the band for you! Black Velvet Ceilidh Trio brings together some of the best folk musicians and dance callers in Bristol and the South West to provide a brilliant music and dance experience that is not only uplifting but also great fun! It is the perfect finale for a wedding, anniversary, family party or corporate event. A Barn Dance or Ceilidh is a great ice-breaker at a wedding. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never danced before. The band brings a specialist dance caller, who walks you through each dance and calls out the moves after the music strikes up. It’s so easy that everyone can join in, from kids and teenagers to Grannies and Grandpas. You’ll soon have everyone laughing and dancing together. A Scottish ceilidh is not complete without “The Dashing White Sergeant” and “Strip The Willow”, while “The Siege of Ennis” and “The Bridge of Athlone” are essential at an Irish Ceili, along with all the favourite Irish songs. If you decide on a Wild West themed event, the band can offer you an excellent night of square-dancing, hoedown style. The line-up includes accordion, guitar and fiddle, and draws from an ever-growing repertoire of English, Irish, Scottish and American jigs and reels which are guaranteed to get toes tapping and fill the dance floor in no time. The band includes an excellent dance caller, with plenty of amusing dances to suit both novices who have never danced before and seasoned ceilidh pros! Black Velvet Band is led by virtuoso fiddle player Mike Evans. Mike opened the very first Glastonbury Festival in 1970 with the iconic rock band “Stackridge,” and the band went on to record the album “Man In The Bowler Hat” with George Martin in 1974. Later, he gained a 1st-class honours degree in music at Bath University, and then spent 8 years leading the Pump Room Trio in Bath and also led the Georgian Festival Orchestra. Over the course of a long and varied musical career, Mike has explored fiddle music in all its forms – from folk dance tunes in Scottish or Irish style to American Bluegrass, also including Gypsy Swing Jazz, European Klezmer - and even Norwegian Hardanger fiddle! Other band members are also seasoned professional musicians, all veterans of the festival circuit, performing with well-regarded Folk bands such as “Spiro”, and “Brand of Fire”.

It was so much fun to have the trio along and they were so clear with their instructions that even the French at our wedding could follow along. Mike’s communication was superb and at one point extremely helpful by replying quickly with a key document, as we dealt with a problem with our venue. Thank you all.

Thanks for the lovely review! The guys thoroughly enjoyed including French folk tunes to make your guests feel at home. Hope you enjoyed the mad dance to "The Can Can" tune at the end!

I had an excellent experience with the black velvet trio! They were very responsive and flexible on and before the night. The caller was easy to understand, enthusiastic and the band are very talented musicians. Would highly recommend them.

Unhappy with our band party night, late start, slow to continue with dances too long trying to coax people be better to get on with the people who were on the dance floor waiting! Band blamed elderly dances the only person older than majority of band was 89 yr old Mother! Messaged band separately before leaving this review. Not helpful at all

I'm the band's manager, so in order to respond to Caryl's comments to me earlier, I spoke to each of the four band members separately and they were all taken aback by Caryl's comment that the band started their performance late. The band was onstage at 19:00 - the agreed start time - but then had to quickly carry out a sound check because Caryl had turned on background music through a separate PA while the band was setting up, preventing them from doing the sound check beforehand. As the start of the set was slightly delayed by the soundcheck, the band of course continued the dancing for a full 60-minute period from the start of the set! I'm very surprised - and somewhat taken aback myself - that Caryl has stated that I blamed "elderly dancers". This is not the case. The band told me that the crowd (some of whom were elderly) were "reluctant dancers". I suggested that perhaps many of her guests hadn't seen each other for a long period and wanted to chat, which might explain why the caller had to take time coaxing them onto the dance-floor.

Mike and David entertained us at our family party. Everyone had an absolutely brilliant time, Mike even got us all dancing which caused a great deal of hilarity! I'd thoroughly recommend them to turn any occasion into one to be fondly remembered.

We hired the Black Velvet Band Ceilidh Trio via Encore for a party, and we could not have been happier with their performance. The band’s admin team reached out prior to the event to make arrangements, and communication was maintained throughout. Set up was quick and efficient in the background of our event, and before we knew it, we were forming lines for our first Ceilidh. It was a mixed group in terms of experience, but Phil delivered clear instructions prior to each dance, and everyone quickly picked it up. The trio are all exceptionally skilled musicians, and the music throughout the dancing was fantastic. We booked two hours of dancing and found that to be the perfect amount of time post-dinner. Black Velvet Band created a fun and lively atmosphere at our event and the Ceilidh dancing was enjoyed by all. We will definitely be in contact with the band for future events and would recommend them to all.

Black Velvet Band Ceilidh Trio - Viv’s 50th Birthday Ceilidh – January 2025 We had an amazing evening. Dan, Ned and Heather were brilliant. Firstly Dan was incredibly helpful and reassuring when I spoke to him a few weeks in advance. He was very relaxed but also incredibly reassuring that it would be fun and go well! He was very warm and I felt ‘everything would be alright’! They came very promptly and set up very unobtrusively. The music was perfect and Ned was a fantastic caller. He drew people in so well and had a very relaxed manner, he made it very enjoyable. Dan on the guitar and Heather on the fiddle were excellent! We had a fantastic evening of dancing with them. So many of our guests commented on how they made it such fun. They made it a great success. I highly recommend them.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

The band makes every effort to be flexible within reason! If you want to tweak the performance start time, get in touch with the bandleader and he will do his best to accommodate you.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

The band plays background music through the PA before the first set and in the break. A D.I.Y. Disco service is available after the ceilidh @ £60.00 an hour.

How much time do you need to set up?
