About Benedict

Conductor
Ely
Versatile conductor - MD of The Façade Ensemble, Cambridge University Graduate Orchestra, Morley College, HMDT Music & John Lewis.

As a singer and an instrumentalist from a young age, Benedict is at home on the concert platform, the theatre pit and the choir stalls. Known for his 'passionate, insightful, and inspiring conducting', he has performed throughout Europe and America (from The Royal Albert Hall to Carnegie Hall); recorded for several record labels and the BFI, and broadcast live on Radio 3. He read music at Cambridge University, holding two conducting scholarships and working with all the university’s top ensembles. It was whilst at university that he founded The Facade Ensemble - a group specialising in 20th century chamber music which has since developed into a dynamic collective of young professionals whose performances are noted for their 'liberal seasoning of vivacity and wit'. Benedict holds the post of Chief Conductor of the Cambridge University Graduate Orchestra and is in demand as a guest conductor throughout Europe - most recently working with the Berlin Sinfonietta on part of a Beethoven Symphony Cycle. He is also committed to community music-making and music education and is Lecturer & Choir Tutor at Morley College, a Musical Director with the John Lewis Partenship and a Music Tutor at HMDT Music.

I've booked Benedict on a number of occasions, both as a singer and choral conductor. As ever, he was a fantastic professional on this occasion: prompt in correspondence and a superb musician. Highly recommended.

It was a pleasure to work with Benedict at the weekend. His singing was excellent at the wedding, and he was completely professional and punctual throughout out correspondence. I would highly recommend Benedict, and would be delighted to work with him again in the future.

From the thrilling opening chorus to the final blazing chord of D major, Passio proved to be a thoroughly compelling and riveting experience. Much of this due to the appropriately passionate, insightful and inspiring conducting of Benedict Collins Rice.

Benedict Collins-Rice and his Façade Ensemble not only made be me feel welcome, but left me unwilling to leave at the music’s close . . . this concert showed me that unfamiliar sound-worlds are best served live and thankfully there are groups like The Façade Ensemble who are willing to make the effort to invite you to share in them.
