Fortunate enough to be able to pursue two interests at once, Ben has just finished his final year supported by a scholarship to study with Jonathan Barritt at the Royal College of Music whilst also studying for a BSc in maths at Imperial College London. Having graduated from Imperial he is currently enjoying being a musician full time and is looking to study in Germany next year. Ben began studying violin and viola at the Trinity College of Music Junior Department aged 10 with Michael Posner and Lynne Baker and in 2013 won the concerto competition, performed with the symphony orchestra and won the Vivienne Joseph Prize for Strings. He subsequently studied with Martin Outram and then with Jonathan Barritt at the RCM. Whilst studying he appeared frequently appeared in solo recitals as part of the Imperial Lunchtime Concert series and at the Benslow International Viola Summer School, with recent highlights including a performance of the Telemann viola concerto at the Royal Albert Hall in May 2016. In September Ben will be a member of the San Marino Concert Academy where he will perform a mixture of solo and chamber music and receive tuition from Andriy Viytovych. Additionally he has performed in masterclasses by Roger Chase, William Coleman, Garfield Jackson, Mathew Jones and Alexander Zemstov. Ben is a committed chamber musician and has had many regular chamber groups, particularly string quartets. This year he played in the Sacconi Chamber Festival in Folkestone and is a chamber soloist with the Academy of Haling Park. In November 2016 he will be one of the resident musicians at the Uppingham International Music Festival performing mixed chamber music. In 2015 he attended the Lake District Summer Music Festival as viola player in the Manon Quartet who in 2014 won the Cavatina Intercollegiate String Quartet Competition. As part of the festival the quartet performed, studied with the Kuss Quartet and were joined in concerts by musicians including Levon Chilingirian. He has also given numerous chamber music recitals for the Cherubim Music Trust both in London and at the Cherubim Mozart festival and for three years attended with scholarship the Advanced Chamber Music course at the Dartington International Summer School where he studied chamber music with Andras Keller and Eberhard Feltz and viola with Garth Knox. He has recently formed a new string quartet at the Royal College of Music which he looks forward to developing next year. Orchestrally he has toured in Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland and Finland and been Principal Viola of the RCM Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras, Imperial College Symphony Orchestra, Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra and the English Schools’ Symphony Orchestra among others. He has also played with the University of London Symphony Orchestra and is Co-Principal of the Arch Sinfonia and has worked with conductors including Vladimir Jurowski, Sir Colin Davis, Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Neville Marriner and Peter Stark.
