As a pianist Ben is technically very sound and his fingering is extremely agile which especially suits pieces with a quick tempo. He plays accurately from a written score and can improvise, adding chords and accompaniment to suit the style of music being played. He can ‘massage’ the piano keys to produce a wide range of musical sound and can produce a rich sound with full chords and weight where appropriate. He shows an acute awareness of sound tone and dynamics. He plays sensitively with feeling to suit a wide range of music and different styles from different eras – classical, jazz, pop. He uses the piano as an expressive instrument and Ben personally, is extremely expressive and is always honed in on the music that he is playing – visually uplifting. He can choose music, fit for group purpose, can write arrangements and has knowledge of the recording process. When Ben has performed solos and duets in our concerts they have always been greeted with much enthusiasm and applause by our audiences. Anita Morris – Chair of Penn Singers.

Ben provided some excellent background music at my mother's 90th birthday celebrations. He also accompanied my daughter and myself for a short musical performance. Ben was most professional in his work and manner. Very pleasant to work with and I would highly recommend him for any form of musical entertainment, having also worked with Ben many times in a professional theatre, I know what an excellent musician he is.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Clients often say that they enjoy the expression within my performances.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Mainly churches and theatres, community halls, country parks, and other venues used for things like wedding receptions and birthday parties. One of the stranger locations was outdoors in December at a shopping centre!

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

I'm quite eclectic in my repertoire, having always been quite hands on with music (i.e. pick it up and play it). I have a fondness for George Gershwin, with his mix of classical and early jazz styles.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

One of the weddings of the Cadbury's.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

Where possible, I will try and accommodate changes of time. This may not be possible if the times are signiciantly altered in the event of having other bookings on the same day. Please keep me updated on any changes in the run up to the event.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Not yet.

How much time do you need to set up?

This depends on if there is a piano/organ at the venue. Assuming there is good access, set up for an electric piano normally only takes up to 20 minutes. I aim to be at the venue an hour prior to the event.

If I have a piano at my venue, are you happy to perform on that?

Certainly. If the instrument is in good order and fairly well tuned, it is generally more engaging than an electric piano to listen to. Sending a recording of some notes being played can soon identify whether it is up to the task.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

-

Are you able to bring your own piano or keyboard?

Yes, happy to do so. I have a Yamaha Motif ES-8 which has been my faithful companion for many performances across the years. :-)

Can you learn song requests before the event?

Normally, as long as: - there are a few days in hand - the sheet music (or for pop, the chords) can be located - it isn't crazily difficult or virtuosic. If the list to learn extensive (i.e. more than a handful of pieces) then there may be an additional fee towards the obtaining and rehearsing them.
