About Barry

Freelance solo, chamber and orchestral oboist
Barry Solomon's profile picture
Oboist
Northwood

I studied under John Wolfe (BBCSO), have been Principal Oboe of the Helios Chamber Orchestra, Co-Principal Oboe and Principal Cor Anglais of the London International Orchestra, and am a freelance performer in solo, chamber and other orchestral settings on the oboe, oboe d'amore and cor anglais, as well as the exceptionally rare bass oboe and musette. I also sing and play in the Rivers of Babylon, a group of singers and instrumentalists who specialise in the religious and secular music of the Iraqi (Babylonian) Jewish tradition. My musical appearances have taken me around the world with performances throughout the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Whether seated in a symphony orchestra or standing alone, my musical voice speaks through my instrument(s). To this, in my solo recitals and talks, I bring the breadth of my experience as an oboist, woodwind player, teacher and repairer of many years; the histories and anecdotes that are entwined with these instruments.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Cadogan Hall, London Regents Park, London Trafalgar Square, London Bevis Marks Synagogue, London … and many other churches, synagogues, concert halls, wedding venues, hotels, community centres and retirement homes across the UK, Europe, India, Israel and North America.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

John Wolfe (BBCSO) Leon Goossens Malcolm Messiter Graham Salter Jonathan Kelly Stefan Schilli Christian Hommel Burkhard Glaetzner François Leleux Dame Emma Kirkby Cecilia Bartoli James Galway Emmanuel Pahud Dr Sara Manasseh

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Define high profile! I’ve played to an audience of over 1,000+ people at the Chazzanut concert in St John Wood, London, but I also played to an audience of 0 people when I performed in the video shoot for Clean Bandit’s no. 1 hit “Symphony”, which has been seen by millions!

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

Things often change. Let me know and I’ll do my best to accommodate any changes.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

I can certainly provide additional recorded music using iPod/iPad/iPhone.

How much time do you need to set up?

This depends on how many instruments I’ll be asked to use. If just one, then 10 minutes would suffice.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

We can agree the programme together in advance.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes. I bring my own instrument(s)/stand(s)/device(s)/etc.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes, within workable parameters of time and logistics.
