Violinist

Verified profile

Athena has recently graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a distinction in her Violin Performance MA. The previous year, she graduated from the University of Oxford with a first-class degree in music and the highest mark in performance across her year. Athena began playing the violin and piano since the ages of 5 and 6, and joined the Royal College of Music Junior Department at the age of 9. Excelling in both piano and violin, she was invited to become joint first study, and won prizes in violin, piano and music theory, both at the RCM and from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. In addition, she was awarded Kingston Young Musician of the Year and Richmond Young pianist of the Year and distinction in both violin and piano dipABRSM diplomas. During this time she was a member of the National Children’s Orchestra and subsequently the National Youth Orchestra where she co-led. She has performed solo violin at the Elgar Room, Albert Hall, solo piano, violin and chamber music at the Wigmore Hall, and as part of a group in Buckingham Palace Gardens for the Queen's Coronation Festival, at Clarence House for the Duchess of Cornwall, and at the House of Lords. Last year, Athena and a fellow student at Oxford took on the exciting project of performing the complete cycle of Beethoven’s violin sonatas in a series of concerts in the Holywell Music Room. This led to them playing and being interviewed on BBC Radio 3 for ‘In tune’. As well as being classically trained Athena is interested in listening to and performing many different genres of music. She is a member of a four-piece country-pop band, Iris and Steel, who write original songs. Athena is a skilled improviser in many styles from country to pop to jazz, having studied improvisation at the Royal College for 5 years. She can perform on both acoustic and electric violin, piano and keyboard. Athena is able to provide a performance tailored to the client's needs at weddings, corporate events, or private functions, as well as being available for music videos and session work. She is very happy to accommodate requests for specific pieces.

Athena Hawksley-Walker and Joe Reynolds provided the entertainment for a formal dinner in Oxford that I was running. Not only did they provide the perfect music for the occasion but they were extremely professional and a delight to work with. I couldn’t recommend them enough!

Athena Hawksley-Walker has played for numerous concerts that I have been involved with. She is utterly professional in approach, and plays with complete commitment. She is equally dedicated to the music whether she is leading or playing rank and file. I also commend Athena to you as a soloist and chamber musician. She is increasingly experienced in both genres, and will not disappoint.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

That I can play almost any song they like, create a vibe perfect for the occasion and have a great time whilst I do it! I'm also professional, friendly, and reliable so will help make the event run as smoothly as possible.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I've performed in a huge range of venues, from beach clubs in Mexico to the 02 Arena, to Wigmore Hall, to UK festivals, to the Konzerthaus in Berlin! I've also done some very exciting private gigs in venues such as the US Ambassador's Residence.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Probably performing for Ed Sheeran at the BRIT Awards in the 02 arena!

Do you have different line-up options?

Yes! I can perform with a pianist, as a violin duo, as a string trio or quartet, or with other instrumentalists such as harpists and saxophonists, and with a DJ as DJ Live!

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

If timings change slightly in the run up to the event, let me know as soon as possible. I will do my best to be flexible

How much time do you need to set up?

I usually set up around 45 minutes to an hour before the performance time, depending on the equipment needed. As soon as my PA is set up (if using a PA) I am able to play background music through it to get guest ready for the performance, if that is desired.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Yes! Feel free to pick specific pieces from the set list - I also include 5 personal song requests in every quote which don't have to be from my set list.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes! I have a PA system suitable for up to 100 guests, a wireless microphone system so I am able to roam if required and can bring either my acoustic or my electric violin.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes, my quote includes up to 5 specific song requests - I just ask that these are given at least a month in advance of the event.
