British-born violist Ariane van Hoof started playing the violin at the age of seven and turned to the viola at eleven years old. She has graduated with first class honours for her BMUS at the Royal Academy of Music. Ariane has performed to renowned violists such as Tabea Zimmermann, Garth Knox, Roger Chase and Hartmut Rohde. An experienced chamber musician, Ariane has taken part in many projects in quartets and trios during her time at the RAM. She was the violist of the Halcyon Quartet, winning the prestigious Davey-Poznanski Scholarship scheme two years in a row. Ariane also enjoys playing in orchestra and has performed at major venues including the Royal Albert Hall, St. John’s Smith Square and the Royal Festival Hall. Ariane has had the privilege of working under the baton of Sir Mark Elder, Semyon Bychkvov and Yan-Pascal Tortelier and playing major orchestral masterpieces such as Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 and Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini. Ariane plays on a Gasparo Piattellini viola made in 1760.
