Andy Mulligan first took an interest in the guitar as a teenager in Liverpool, influenced in equal parts by John Williams and Jimi Hendrix. Alongside his formal music training he sang in several choirs and played guitar in local bands. He attained a BMus degree in music (specialising in guitar and composition) at Cardiff University, and later briefly studied guitar with John Mills at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. After completing a PGCE in Secondary Music at University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, he undertook two tours of the US singing with the Black Mountain Chorus of Wales. On his return he started working for Rhondda Cynon Taff Music service in 1999 as a guitar tutor. As a musician Andy has enjoyed 10 years of performing and recording with Only Men Aloud, alongside a variety of engagements on the guitar in pit orchestras, rock bands, smaller ensembles and as a soloist. He also takes on occasional recording projects, working on garageband, pro tools and iMovie.

Andy played the guitar for our winter wedding: what a fantastic musician! Our wedding took place in December, which meant that the church filled up quite quickly with people wanting to stay cosy and warm on a chilly day. Andy played for the congregation as they chatted whilst finding their seats and his choice of music created a magical atmosphere for everyone in the church. He is very knowledgeable about musical genres and spoke to us beforehand about our ideas for this part of the day – we discussed our thoughts about wanting to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere and Andy suggested a wonderful running order for pieces that would do exactly that! He is a highly professional and experienced musician – he is a fantastic person to discuss ideas with. He listened carefully to our ideas before drafting a suggested running order and I guarantee that he will pick the pieces you’ll love! I’ll always remember my walk down the aisle as he played my husband’s favourite song and yes, I did shed a few tears of joy! Andy is an experienced musician, which means that his timing is impeccable. He judged the length of time to play at the start and the end of the wedding procession perfectly, which just made the service all the more special. Best of all I could relax, knowing that Andy’s professionalism, skills and experience would mean this important part of our wedding day was in very, very safe hands! Thank you Andy!
