Celtic folk band
Edinburgh

An Conasg are Tara Cunningham (fiddle), Sam Gillespie (wooden flute and vocals) and Siannie Moodie (Clàrsach), a vibrant trio recently to have emerged from Edinburgh’s traditional music scene. The heart of their music is the tune, the traditional or newly composed melody lovingly carried by all 3 instruments with the harmonic accompaniment of the clàrsach, rhythmic and lyrical at once. Yet they love to experiment, to play, harmonise and create space for each individual voice to express itself. The trio’s intimate musical communion makes for exciting live shows that feel truly dynamic, and whether exploring an ancient, haunting air or a blazing contemporary reel, they always seek to be true to the spirit of the music. Drawing deeply from the wellsprings of Scottish, English and Irish traditions An Conasg are also open in their outlook and take much inspiration from the musical languages of other lands, especially those of Britanny, Scandanavia, French Canada, American Old-time and the Middle East. The phrase ‘an conasg’ is gaelic for the gorse or the broom and the symbolism of these plants resonates strongly with the band. In ancient times the yellow bloom, always present to some degree even in Winter, was held to carry the fire and inspiration of the Sun god through the dark times of the year. An Conasg formed in the run up to Beltane when the gorse is bright on the hills and in the traveller tradition a time for roving, love, friendship and adventure. In many ways the band feel that the conasg embodies the calling of the travelling musician.

An Conasg were the greatest addition to our wedding, playing for our ceremony and afterwards. They were communicative, warm, friendly and professional, as well as being a brilliant group of musicians. We could not recommend them more highly!

Customer questions

Do you have different line-up options?

We also play with a wonderful Bodhràn player for added rhythm in more upbeat sets, for example for ceilidhs.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

Please let us know of any timing changes prior to the event.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Absolutely. This is a really popular request and we actually offer this service for free. If you'd like a DJ service via our PA after the final set until the venue closes, we provide this for an additional £160. We do not have lighting however, so it may be worth your while to book a professional DJ.

How much time do you need to set up?

We usually set up our own PA and do a sound check in 1 hour/1.5 hours. If we are playing acoustic or with amps we need half an hour to an hour.

Can you roam around while you perform?

No, sorry.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

No, we do not have our own lighting and our PA is £120 extra.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

For weddings we can include one extra song or piece of your choosing. Beyond this it is a £30 fee for this service to take into account rehearsal time etc.
