About Alice Howell

A classically trained soprano and contemporary songwriter who sings in the genres of opera, classical song, musical theatre, jazz and pop.
Singer (soprano)
London
Public liability insurance of £1 million

Alice has recently graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance where she gained a First Class Honours in BMus Music Performance (Voice) and where she studied under Jon Christos and Alistair Young. She received a bursary award from 'Friends of East Suffolk Performing Arts' to support her degree. Alice specialises in classical singing and also has a background in Musical Theatre and straight acting training. In addition to this, she has extensive dance training including ballet, pointe work, tap, modern, jazz, contemporary and commercial. She also writes and performs her own songs while accompanying herself on piano, mainly in the genre of Pop Ballad. She has released two original singles: 'Home' (2020) and 'Slow Decline' (2021) which are available on all music platforms. Alice’s opera experience includes the role of 'Bridesmaid/Chorus' in Trinity Laban Conservatoire's Opera Scenes (Le Nozze di Figaro). Her other roles include 'Ida' in 'Die Fledermaus', a student project at Trinity Laban Conservatoire and 'Barbarina' in Puzzle Piece Opera's 'The Marriage of Figaro'. Alice's choral works, where she was the soprano soloist, consist of: Faure’s Requiem, Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria in D Major’, Mendelssohn’s ‘Hear My Prayer/O for the Wings of a Dove’, Haydn’s ‘Missa Sancti Nicolai’ and Philip Ledger’s Requiem.Alice's other performances consist of a range of arias and ensemble works in: Puzzle Piece Opera's 'Sounding Shakespeare' Gala; Puzzle Piece Opera's 'A Night of Celebration'; Froxfield Choir and Alton Concert Orchestra's 'An evening of operatic favourites'; Puzzle Piece Opera's 'Festivals' themed Opera Gala; 'A Night at the Opera' concert with Trinity Laban Conservatoire; 'Late 19th Century Music' with Auriga Capella, performed in Langley Ballroom; Froxfield Choir's 'Night Flight' concert and many concerts at The University of Chichester Conservatoire. Alice's solo recitals include: a solo concert at The Cut, Halesworth which was comprised of a mixture of classical and musical theatre pieces and 'A Walk Through the Classics' also performed at The Cut, comprised solely of classical pieces and arias. These concerts were both ticketed and given a number of complimentary reviews. She also performed in a Lieder Recital in Southwold, Suffolk where she sang works by Franz Schubert, Robert and Clara Schumann and Richard Strauss. Before she transferred to study at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, she studied at The University of Chichester Conservatoire. In her first year at Chichester she gained a place in the University’s Chamber Choir and was one of a select group of twelve who sang for the Otter Consort. She toured with the Chamber Choir in Prague (2017) and Germany (2018) and sung in Leeds Cathedral and in Symphony Hall, Birmingham. She performed with the Otter Consort at paid weddings and funerals in various venues and at evensong services in Chichester, Winchester and Salisbury Cathedrals.

Alice's voice is broad ranging both in pitch and colour, and she used these qualities to good affect throughout the evening in a programme which was varied and excellently presented. If I had to choose a highlight from her recital it would be her two songs by Quilter, which were beautifully sung by any standards. I particularly enjoyed her interpretation of 'Les Chemins de l'amour' by Poulenc; but her songs in German and Italian, which formed the greater part of the programme, were equally confident, impressive and idiomatic.

If this concert was designed to showcase Alice's versatility, then it succeeded magnificently. She was as comfortable with Handel's stately Ode on the Birthday of Queen Anne as she was with the playful rush of Die Fledermaus. To a confident and assured soprano voice with a fine range she has added a new-found mastery of character, swapping easily from the wistful Mimi of La Bohème to Lehár's coquettish Giuditta. For Kurt Weill's Youkali she became a charming French chanteuse. Alice gave us fifteen pieces in her concert, moving easily and fluently between French, German and Italian. The audience would have been glad of more. No-one who saw this concert could doubt that Alice is on the way to great things. But don't forget us, Alice. We'd love to hear more.

Customer questions

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

It depends how much notice is given. If it is within a few weeks of the booking, it is probably possible to rearrange. If it is after this, it would have to fit around my availability or I would still have to charge at least half of the fee.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

No.

How much time do you need to set up?

It depends on the type of event.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Definitely.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

I will bring my own sheet music if needed but if I required a keyboard/piano I would need one to be available.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes! As long as I know about them in good time before the event.
