About Stool of Repentance

Bonkers three-piece ceilidh band (plus caller) playing a huge repertoire of traditional tunes.
Ceilidh band
London
Public liability insurance of £10 million

Stool of Repentance (named after a Scottish jig) is a versatile, high-energy ceilidh band based in London. We usually operate as a three or four piece depending on the requirements of the client (fiddle, melodeon, tenor banjo and guitar) plus our experienced caller. Our repertoire is consists of traditional Scottish ceilidh tunes, with a bit of Irish trad, Playford, and Bal thrown into the mix. Over the years, played everywhere from village halls and public parks, to warehouses and pride parades. No event is too bizarre, and we love any excuse for a ceilidh. We’re a group of folk musicians who met on the local session circuit. We’ve been performing together since Burns Night 2024! Our experienced caller is brilliant at getting everyone involved, making the dances accessible and enjoyable for complete beginners while still keeping things engaging for experienced ceilidh dancers.

Stool of Repentance was a great choice for my birthday party! The band was slick and the caller got everyone dancing. All my guests said it was the highlight of their evening.

I was so impressed by stool of repentance, they had incredible musicianship and knew just how to get everyone involved regardless of dancing experience

Customer questions

Can you perform covers?

We take tune requests within reason.

Do you have different line-up options?

Yes! Our line-up includes: Fiddle, Guitar, Melodeon, and Tenor Banjo. We can alter this to suit your requirements!

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We will do our best to accommodate time changes if you let us know within a reasonable amount of time.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, we usually have a playlist of folk tunes that we play before the set so let us know if you have any requests! Normally, we play a few tunes between dances while dancers cool down and get some water.

How much time do you need to set up?

It usually takes us about 45 minutes- an hour to set up for an amplified gig. Unamplified we don't need much time at all!

Do you provide a caller?

Yes, we have a fantastic caller who works regularly with us so no need to worry about hiring one separately. If you already have a caller in mind let us know and we can do a lower fee for just the band.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Our set lists are tailored to the steps of the dances. If you have particular requests it is good to let us know before hand to make sure they fit with the requirements of the dance.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA) included in your quote?

We hire in large equipment such as a PA in externally for venues that do not already have their own. The hiring of the equipment and its transport to the venue needs to be factored into the quote and the price will depend on the location of your venue. We have a regular sound tech who works with us which is included in the quote.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

Yes!
