About Alex Hinton-Smith

Experienced and Versatile Bassist with Strong Sight-Reading. Pit Orchestras/Function Bands/Studio Recordings.
Bass Guitarist
Brighton
Public liability insurance of £10 million

I am a 23 year old bassist with plenty of experience in pit orchestras, function gigs, and studio sessions. I primarily work in pit orchestras as a bassist typically playing electric bass but also double bass and synth bass when required. I've worked for a variety of amateur companies with many different MDs around London and Oxfordshire. Starting out in bands and regularly gigging from the age of 15, my second band eventually got signed to a small label where I gained valuable experience at a young age touring, recording multiple EPs, and playing big gigs and festivals; even headlining venues such as the O2 Oxford when I was 18 years old. From there I left Oxford to study at BIMM Brighton where I achieved a First Class Honours in Music Business and simultaneously used this time to gain more practical experience and follow my passion of playing in pit orchestras with am-dram companies around London and Oxford. I have played a variety of shows from traditional musicals such as Kiss Me Kate and My Fair Lady to modern classics such as Legally Blonde, Sister Act, and The Wedding Singer among many more. I am a strong reader with lots of experience depping in function bands with no prior rehearsal and am comfortable coming in as a pit player at the last minute for shows but I will always prefer to see the music before booking a gig whenever possible. Furthermore, I have a BTEC in Music Technology and also have extensive experience playing piano, drums, and guitar at gigs and sessions. This gives me a great understanding and empathy of everyone's point of view in the band as well as making me a great problem solver and useful asset in any musical setting. I pride myself on being incredibly easy to work with and bringing genuine passion and positive energy to every project I am involved with! All of my clients' and peers' reviews can be found on other platforms but for any further references please feel free to contact me and I can put you in touch with numerous MDs and session players I've worked with over the years.

Alex is always my first choice for bassist when MDing a show. Amazing player but also always so professional, and clearly enjoys his work. It's always a pleasure to work with him!

Alex is a pleasure to work with, he applies his positivity and professionalism to everything he does. As a drummer, I feel reassured to have Alex in the pit with me and always have a great time playing together!

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

A frequent compliment I am always proud of receiving from MDs, other players, and clients is that I bring a positive energy and passion to all of my work. No booking is ever "just another gig" to me and I will always comprehensively prepare whenever possible so I know the music back to front and can focus instead on giving the best possible performance.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I have headlined several O2 Academy venues with a previous band as well as large festivals such as Teddy Rocks. In pit work I have played a variety of theatres in London and Oxford usually 150-500 capacity including the beautiful and historic Chipping Norton Theatre.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

This is absolutely fine and I'm more than happy to rearrange if given reasonable time to plan and providing there is no clash with any of my other bookings!

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes absolutely! The only things I will need provided are the music (ideally in advance as a PDF file or I can come and meet you to pick up charts/books), power, and usually a personal mixer is provided on pit orchestra gigs but this varies depending on the size of the production.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes, I always prefer to learn and put in the time to practice pieces ahead of a gig instead of sight-reading. I will always make myself available to pick up music early if possible but I am also very comfortable sight-reading for electric bass for last minute bookings however music involving bowed double bass will need some time before a gig to prepare.
