Alastair Smith

Alastair began playing music at the age of 7, after visiting a local live musical instrument 'try-out' session, and hasn't looked back since. Primarily a cellist, Alastair has played in a multitude of orchestras and chamber ensembles across the country. During his undergraduate career, he studied under Jennifer Langridge and playing as principal cellist of the Manchester University Symphony, Chamber and String Orchestras, as well as featuring in the Baroque and Contemporary Music Ensembles. Furthermore, Alastair has studied composition under the likes of Philip Grange, Camden Reeves and Kevin Malone. An avid and vocal advocate of new music, he has written for many ensembles and solo instruments and has collaborated with other musicians, designers, dancers and videographers on projects. Playing the cello, Alastair has had several professional engagements; soloist for Dudley Choral Society, continuo for Wigan Choral Society and several engagements with the Amicus Trio and the Lale Quartet, to name a few. Alastair also sings, performing as either a Baritone or Tenor as the situation dictates. Previous professional engagements have included weddings and guest cathedral performances. Currently working as a teacher for Berkshire Maestros Music Service, Alastair teaches people of all ages and abilities while continuing to work privately as a performer and composer. Alastair frequently visits hubs in Birmingham and Manchester where he also teaches.
