Wedding band
Milton Keynes
Public liability insurance of £5 million

We're Francis, a four-piece wedding and party band based in Milton Keynes. The line-up is drums, bass, guitar, and me on vocals, switching between guitar and keys through the set. That's what most couples book. We also work as a duo or trio for ceremonies, drinks receptions and smaller rooms, and we can expand for bigger venues — so the same act covers the whole day rather than you booking two. Between us we've played over 3,000 shows. A lot of that was abroad: three years of residencies in Dubai, including the Waldorf Astoria and Lock Stock and Barrel, where we picked up TimeOut Dubai's Best Bar Band award in 2019. The same year we played the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, on a bill that also featured Sam Smith and Guns N' Roses. We've done after-show performances for Coldplay and Kings of Leon, and flown out for weddings as far as Cape Town. Our music is licensed to Universal Music in Dubai. That background matters less than what it taught us, which is how to read a room. A wedding is not a gig. The dance floor fills in its own time, the first hour is not the third, and a band that plays its favourite set regardless of what's happening in front of it will empty a room quickly. We watch what's working and move accordingly. The live repertoire runs to about 180 songs — pop, rock, indie, soul, Motown, and everything from the 60s through to now. Send us the songs you want in, and just as usefully the ones you want kept out. Anything not already in the set, tell us early and we'll say honestly whether we can have it ready for your date. First dances we arrange specifically; six to eight weeks' notice is ideal. A standard wedding booking is two 60-minute sets in the evening, with a DJ service running before, between and after them at no extra cost, so the room never goes quiet. Hand us a playlist for it or leave it to us. PA, stage monitoring and lighting all come with us — there's nothing for you to hire in. We also run Bandeoke, which is live band karaoke: your guests take the microphone and the band backs them properly, following whoever is up there rather than playing to a backing track. It needs a decent crowd — 40 guests upwards, strongest between 80 and 200. Most people have us play a normal set first to warm the room, then move into Bandeoke once people are up. Marshall booked us to do it for a corporate event, which tells you it travels beyond weddings. Alongside the covers work we write and release our own material, somewhere between alt-rock, indie and soul, out on CD and vinyl. We're within an hour of most of Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire, and travel well beyond that, including overseas. Tell us the date, the venue and roughly how many guests, and we'll come back with a firm number rather than a range.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Reading the room, and requests. What comes back most often is that we play what the room actually wants rather than working through a fixed set, and that requests get played rather than politely noted. The other is that the dance floor fills and stays full instead of emptying after the first three songs.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Three years of residencies in Dubai, including the Waldorf Astoria and Lock Stock and Barrel, plus the 2019 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. More recently a run of nights at Mead Open Farm in Bedfordshire, and weddings as far as Cape Town. Alongside those, hotels, private estates and venues across the Home Counties.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

The Beatles for the songwriting, and Hendrix for what a guitar can do on its own. Beyond that, Stereophonics, Oasis and Coldplay shape a lot of what we play, with a soul streak underneath from Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers. Our own material sits somewhere between alt-rock, indie and soul.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

The 2019 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, on a bill that also featured Sam Smith and Guns N' Roses. Alongside that, after-show performances for Coldplay and Kings of Leon, and TimeOut Dubai's Best Bar Band award in 2019, won during our residency at Lock Stock and Barrel.

Do you have different line-up options?

Yes. Solo and duo for ceremonies and drinks receptions, trio for smaller rooms, and the four-piece — drums, bass, guitar and vocals — which is what most people book for the evening. Above that we expand as far as a ten-piece Motown line-up for bigger rooms. Tell us the space and guest count and we'll say what it needs.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

Expected — running orders move on the day at nearly every wedding. Tell us as soon as you know and we'll shift the set times to fit. With four of us plus gear there are limits on how late we can run, so if a change pushes the finish back significantly we'll say straight away what's possible and whether it affects the fee.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, and it's included. A DJ service runs before, between and after our sets at no extra cost, so the room never goes quiet and you don't need to book a separate DJ. Send us a playlist in advance, hand us one on the night, or leave the choice to us.

How much time do you need to set up?

Around 90 minutes for the full band — PA, backline, stage monitoring, lighting and a soundcheck. Two hours if access is tight, there are stairs, or load-in is a long way from the stage. Tell us the venue's access and we'll confirm exactly. We'd rather be set up early and out of the way before guests arrive.

Can you roam around while you perform?

During afternoon performances this can be arranged but for full band performances we are limited with the amount of movement we can do while playing.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Yes. Send us the songs you want in and, just as usefully, the ones you want kept out. We'll build the set around them and place the slower songs where they'll work. Our repertoire runs to about 180 songs, so most requests are already in it — anything that isn't, tell us early and we'll be honest about the date.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

Yes — PA, stage monitoring, backline, microphones and atmospheric lighting all come with us, so there's nothing for you to hire in. All we need from you is the venue's ceiling height, stage dimensions, access details and any sound limit or curfew, which we'll ask about when you book.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

Yes, and we do it regularly — first dances especially, which we arrange specifically for the band. Send us the track and we'll tell you what's possible. Six to eight weeks' notice is ideal. If a song won't work well live with our line-up we'll say so rather than deliver a weak version of it.
