For over 30 years I've been moving dancefloors. Music has no borders, and neither do my sets. I'm DJ Bala, Dutch-born and based in Gainesville, Florida.
My youth was filled with traditional Indian bhajan and kirtan, then classical music like Vivaldi. I started DJing in the mid-nineties, when I discovered trance and fell in love with it: the driving beats, the haunting vocals, artists like Tiësto, Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren, and Nicky Romero, with LTJ Bukem's melodic edge in the mix. Those roots are still in everything I play. But I never stopped listening wide: reggae, pop, rock, whatever moved me. My open-format sound today grew out of watching people on the dancefloor: the common roots between genres, and the ways to blend them, became obvious from there. Now that means progressive house, EDM, reggaeton, moombahton, afrobeats, r&b, and bollywood/Indian fusion, whatever the room calls for.
I don't just press play on other people's records. I make remixes, custom edits, and mashups so your first dance, your entrance, or your peak-time set sounds like yours, not a stock playlist. I focus on smooth, story-driven transitions that build energy all night. And I bring the production, too: I set up and run my own sound rig, troubleshoot it live, and have stage-managed and run backstage at festivals, so the technical side is handled by someone who actually understands it.
The highlights I'm proudest of are the ones built on trust. I'm a veteran of the KuliMela festival circuit across North America and Europe (2007 through 2026), where I helped pioneer electronic-devotional fusion and have co-organized festivals and run their backstage, not just performed. I've held down recurring club nights at Gainesville venues like Simons, Signal, and The Loft, and played weddings, sweet sixteens, quinceañeras, and pool parties. Being brought back for milestone after milestone means more to me than any one-off crowd. Spring 2026 was capped by a B2B set at KuliMela with my twelve-year-old son, DJ Hrishi. Passing my love of music on to him is its own kind of highlight.
I read a room, and pick up on a family's particular mix of customs, especially for Indian weddings, where no two families celebrate the same way. I married into an Indian family myself, so I know that firsthand. You get an independent DJ, not an agency: you work directly with me, from the first message to the last song.
