Petula Beckles is a Gospel Jazz Soul vocalist, songwriter and live performer whose rich, expressive voice brings together the warmth of soul, the freedom of jazz and the heart of gospel music. Born in Tobago and based in New York, Petula has built a performance career rooted in storytelling, musicality and genuine connection with an audience. Her repertoire moves comfortably between original music, gospel, jazz and soul, creating performances that can be intimate and reflective or joyful and full of energy. An award-winning recording artist, Petula has released multiple projects and received recognition for songs and recordings including “Can’t Find the Words,” “My Song of Jesus” and “Wherever Jesus Leads Me.” Her work as a vocalist is complemented by years of experience as a songwriter, producer, vocal coach and musical theatre performer. Petula can perform in several configurations depending on the event—from an intimate solo or piano-supported performance to a fuller live-band experience. She is especially suited for concerts, jazz and arts festivals, Weddings, faith-based events, cultural programs, corporate and special events, and curated listening experiences. At the center of every performance is the same goal: to make the audience feel something. Petula’s performances combine strong vocals, warmth, humor and story, allowing the music to become more than background entertainment—it becomes part of the experience people remember.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Clients often describe my performances as warm, soulful and deeply engaging. I don’t simply sing at an audience—I connect with the room, blending Gospel, Jazz and Soul with storytelling, spontaneity and genuine interaction. Every performance is shaped to feel personal, polished and memorable.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I’ve performed in venues ranging from performing arts centers and theaters to festivals, churches and intimate music spaces, including Lincoln Center, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Jamaica Performing Arts Center, CENTER for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck, Porter Sanford III Performing Arts Center, Romulus, Arlene’s Grocery and The Delancey.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Ella Fitzgerald, Babbie Mason and Nat King Cole are among my musical influences. I’m drawn to Ella’s freedom and musicality, Babbie’s faith-centered storytelling, and Nat King Cole’s warmth and phrasing—while always working to let those influences inform, rather than define, my own voice.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Performing at the Pre-Stellar Awards was an early career milestone that made me feel part of the larger Gospel music industry. Since then, I’ve performed in venues and events of many sizes, and I genuinely approach each engagement as important—whether it’s a major stage or an intimate room.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I understand that event schedules sometimes shift. Minor timing changes can usually be accommodated with advance notice. Significant changes to the performance or call time may affect availability and could require an adjusted quote, particularly if additional time is required on site.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes. Background music can be provided before and between performance sets when appropriate and arranged in advance. If you require dedicated DJ services, extended music coverage or specific production equipment, I’m happy to discuss those needs as part of your event quote.

How much time do you need to set up?

I typically allow 60–90 minutes before the performance for arrival, setup and soundcheck. Larger ensembles or events with more extensive production requirements may require additional time. Final setup needs will be confirmed with you in advance based on the venue and event.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Absolutely. You’re welcome to share favorites from my repertoire, and I’ll work them into the performance where they fit best. I’ll also curate the overall set to create the right musical flow for your event. Special song requests outside my repertoire may be available with advance notice.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Equipment needs vary by event and ensemble size. I can provide select performance equipment when appropriate, while larger events may require the venue or client to provide professional sound and backline. Technical requirements will be confirmed in advance so everything is performance-ready.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes. Special song requests can often be accommodated with sufficient advance notice. Depending on the song, arrangement and ensemble requirements, an additional fee may apply. Please share requests as early as possible so I can confirm what’s feasible and prepare the music properly.
