About John

John Henry is a percussive fingerstyle guitarist known for his virtuoso guitar playing and wide array of techniques
Guitarist

John Henry Johnson is a virtuoso guitar player who performs all over the United States. As a teenager fascinated with Eddie Van Halen he dove into learning to play electric guitar, spending countless hours studying on the internet. Soon he was playing with cover bands and collaborating far and wide with his highly technical guitar playing. Inspired by fingerstyle guitar players such as Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel, he picked up a steel string guitar as well and began a slightly different journey. In 2013 John Henry studied classical guitar under Dr Joseph Williams III until 2016, collaborating with many classical guitar players in the meantime at events such as the Texas Guitar Conference and as part of the University of Mary Hardin Baylor’s Guitar Quartet and Duo. In 2020 after spending several years developing his steel string fingerstyle technique with his classical and rock roots combined with influence from artists such as Michael Hedges, Mike Chapdelaine, and Alexandr Misko, he began his carreer as a full time musician based in Austin, Texas and has since been performing far and wide at concerts, festivals, benefits, and many more. He released his debut EP Quest for Creation in 2021 and subsequent album Quarks and Quarter Notes in 2024. In 2023 John Henry joined Austin Classical Guitar as Artistic Coordinator and is an ambassador to international musicians who make their visit to Austin.

John Henry played for one of our VIP receptions and set the perfect tone from the moment guests arrived. His music was refined and tasteful, adding just the right amount of energy without ever overpowering the room. You could tell how skilled he was, even while keeping things subtle. He was also a total professional. On time, well-prepared, and incredibly easy to work with. We received so many compliments from attendees and will definitely be reaching out to book him again for future events.

This is a common occurrence and I plan for small changes in my schedule, if the day of event shifts please confirm with me and I will accommodate if possible.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes

How much time do you need to set up?

Setup can be done in as little as 20 minutes but I allow 1-2 hours based on event size to allow for unforeseen challenges.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

You can, I tend to make a loose setlist and go with the flow of the event and how people receive certain songs.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes, there is a chance I know the song already even if it is not on my setlist. For most pieces I can arrange them in a few days. If the piece is exceptionally complex I may need several weeks of notice and there may be a charge.
