Tom Dixon is a countertenor currently based in Oxford. Tom was born and raised in Bromley in South East London. A keen singer from a young age, he was first part of a choir in primary school. At the age of 10, he won a choral scholarship at the Queen's Chapel of the Savoy, London, a position he held until the age of 15. During his last year in the choir, he held the position of Head Chorister. After his voice broke, he continued to sing in three separate school choirs, one of which (the school's Chapel Choir) he directed and managed, with one of his peers, when he was in Upper VIth form. It was during his years in secondary school that he first experienced performing a solo role on stage when he portrayed Anthony in 'Sweeney Todd' (Sondheim), with the Musical Theatre Group of the Bromley Youth Music Trust (BYMT). In 2011, Tom was awarded a bursary from the Bromley Œcumenical Singers to aid with the costs of his musical training, with whom he subsequently performed as a soloist in concert. After leaving school, Tom won an academic place at the University of Oxford, to read Biochemistry, and was also offered a Choral Scholarship at St Peter's College. During the four years of his undergraduate course, he became established as a well-known singer, deputising for many Oxford Colleges (Magdalen, New, Queen's, Merton, Hertford, Oriel, Exeter, Wadham) and other choirs (Arcadian Singers, Oxford University Chorus). He was also a member of Schola Cantorum of Oxford (directed by James Burton) for a year. His first experience as an opera soloist was as Unulfo in 'Rodelinda' (Handel) in a production that took place in High Wycombe, and he followed his successes there with further roles in Oxford productions, notably; Endimione in 'La Calisto' (Cavalli), the Sorceress in 'Dido and Aeneas' (Purcell), and Krüger in the world première run of 'a Sketch of Slow Time' (Meyers). He also portrayed Orpheus in a new translation of Poliziano's play by the same name, with original music composed by fellow student Benjamin van Leeuwen. Tom subsequently took up a Stipendiary Clerkship with the choir of Magdalen College, Oxford from September 2015 until July 2017, with whom he sang 6 weekly services during University Full Term, as well as undertaking additional concerts and projects outside of term. Tom is currently reading for a DPhil in Biochemistry at New College, Oxford, and sings regularly on Sunday mornings at the Oratory Church of St Aloysius Gonzaga, Oxford. He also plays Clarinet, Flute and Saxophone to a Grade 8(+) standard, and enjoys playing for orchestral concerts and pit bands. He is always looking for more opportunities to perform and is more than happy to be contacted through Encore.
