About Rory

Conductor, Composer, Pianist and Tenor studying Music at the University of Manchester
Conductor
Manchester

Rory Wainwright Johnston (b. 1993) is a conductor, composer and pianist from Bradford on Avon, near Bath, and is in his third year of studying music at Manchester University. He enjoyed a productive second year as both an orchestral and choral conductor within MUMS, getting the chance to conduct many different ensembles within the university, as well as setting up some of his own concerts including a successful Christmas concert featuring Britten's Ceremony of Carols. Rory studied piano with pianist and harpsichordist Sophie Yates, with whom he prepared for his dipABRSM piano diploma. Whilst under her tutelage he was selected twice for piano master-classes with Joanna MacGregor, culminating in a chance to perform on one of Rachmaninov's pianos held at the Holburne Museum in Bath. Whilst still in sixth form he wrote and conducted the incidental music for his school's lauded Hamlet production. He was also a music assistant for Bath Theatre Royal's Youth Performance Theatre, The Egg, for a number of years, writing music for and playing in numerous productions on and off site. During his gap year, Rory worked at a local secondary school as accompanist for its two choirs and as rehearsal pianist for productions of Les Misérables and Noyes Fludde. He also directed and conducted their semi-staged performance of Dido and Aeneas. Rory also sings at a high standard having sung as a treble with the Bath Abbey Choir for six years, two of those as head chorister, and then returning as a tenor from the age of 17. In his role as a lay clerk, Rory has sung in broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and 4, as well as on many of the Abbey's current CD recordings. Rory now studies conducting with both Mark Heron and Justin Doyle. Going into the final year of his degree, he now takes on the role of director of Ad Solem, the university's chamber choir, as well as being given the opportunity to conduct symphony orchestra.
