Rachel Maby is a mezzo-soprano from London who is currently studying for a Masters in vocal performance at Trinity Laban conservatoire of music and dance, having graduated from the the prestigious Joint Course at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) and University of Manchester (UoM) in 2015 with a 1st performance diploma in voice and a 2:1 Bachelor of Music (GRNCM). She performs a vast array of repertoire, with a focus on opera and contemporary chamber music. Rachel has worked as an opera singer with notable companies and orchestras, which include Constella OperaBallet, Helios Collective, Nottingham Philhamonic Orchestra, Baseless Fabric Theatre and Asyla Ensemble. Operatic roles include Mrs Cratchit in 'A Ceremony of Carols by Thea Musgrave (Laban Theatre, 2018); 'Lucretia' in The Rape of Lucretia by Benjamin Britten (Stratford Circus, July 2018); 'Enfant' in L'enfant et les sortlièges by Ravel (Blackheath Concert Hall); 'Delilah' and 'Palm Reader' in Sideshows one-woman opera-ballet by Leo Geyer (Lilian Bayllis Studio, Grimeborn Opera Festival, Tête à Tête Opera festival, Edinburgh Festival); 'Charlotte' in Glasstown opera-ballet excerpt by Leo Geyer (Arts Theatre, Leicester Square); 'Marthe' in Faust excerpt by Gounod (RNCM Opera Theatre); 'Malika' in Lakme excerpt by Delibes with the Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra (cond. Mark Heron at the Nottingham Concert Hall); Jou Jou in The Merry Widow by Franz Lehar (cond. Clark Rundell at the RNCM Opera Theatre); 'Javotte' in Manon by Massenet and 'Cupid' in Venus and Adonis by John Blow (Martin Harris Centre). Rachel has a particular passion for chamber and contemporary classical music. She has sung as a soloist in the premières of the following chamber works to date: Sea Garden by Leo Geyer (Chelsea Flower Show, 2018) Songs for a dying world by Edward Nesbit (Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall, 2018) Resonance Project by Oliver Beer (Thaddeus Ropac Gallery, 2017) Poems of Pooja by Bertram Wee (2016) The Lost Medusa of Leonardo da Vinci by Camden Reeves (Lancaster Jazz Festival 2015) Fear no more by Tom Harrold (Shakespeare Festival 2015) Star Songs by Jonathan Woolgar (the Forge, 2015) Sunset in Grey by Leo Geyer (Lancaster Jazz Festival 2014) During her studies at the RNCM, she co-founded and performed in Khymerikal - a contemporary classical ensemble for voice, piano, clarinet, cello and violin. Khymerikal recorded twice live on BBC Radio 3 In Tune (listen here) and performed in diverse concert settings, from internationally recognised concert halls the Forge, King's Place and the International Anthony Burgess Foundation, to the Lancaster Jazz Festival and Servant Jazz Quarters in London. Rachel is also an experienced choral singer and alumni of the Genesis Sixteen (cond. Harry Christophers and Eamonn Dougan) and Manchester Singers (which she co-founded). She currently sings with the Trinity Laban Chamber Choir (cond. Stephen Jackson). She has perviously sung with Icosa chamber choir (cond. Luke Mather), as choral scholar at St Mary-of-the-Angel's in Nottinghill; Ad Solem chamber choir (cond. Dave Young and Robert Brooks), RNCM Chamber Choir (cond. Jamie Burton) and the London Vocal Project (cond. Pete Churchill). Choral performance highlights Fauré's Requiem with the Sixteen at the Bridgewater Hall (cond. Harry Christophers); Sounds Sublime Festival at St Martin-in-the-Field's with Manchester Singers; Handel's Dixit Dominus at the Dora Stoutzker Hall with Genesis Sixteen (cond. Eamonn Dougan and Harry Christophers); Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 at the Bridgewater Hall with RNCM Chamber Choir(cond. Mark Shanahan); Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream with RNCM Chamber Choir (cond. Mark Elder) and John Dankworth's Final Concert at the Royal Festival Hall with the London Vocal Project (cond. Pete Churchill). Rachel also has a strong jazz background - she started her formal jazz training aged 16, when she became the only jazz singer to study on the Junior Jazz Programme at the Royal Academy of Music, lead by trumpeter Nick Smart and pianist Simon Colam. At 19, she won third prize in the Finsterwalde International Jazz Singing Competition. Since then, she has collaborated and performed with a number of jazz groups and acclaimed jazz musicians, most notably Soweto Kinch (saxophonist/rapper), the Manchester Jazz Collective, Johnny Hunter (drummer), Kyran Matthews (saxophonist), Hugo Corbin (guitarist) and Giovanni Cacioppo (guitarist). Jazz performance highlights include the Grahamstown South Africa Jazz Festival with Soweto Kinch; singing alongside trumpeter Kenny Wheeler at Ronnie Scott's with the RAM Junior Jazz Band and singing with the London Vocal Project alongside Cleo Laine and John Dankworth in the acclaimed clarinnetist's final concert at the Royal Festival Hall. Reocording credits include Soweto Kinch's The Legend of Mike Smith (2013).
