Francis took up the cello aged 7, more recently becoming a first-study singer under the tutelage of Carys Lane, Richard Strivens, and Sam Howley amongst others. After schooling in Manchester, he completed a gap year working at The Manchester Grammar School, assisting in the musical direction of a run of The Producers and helping to run various school ensembles. He also sang with the Rodolfus Choir, engagements including a BBC Radio 3 Broadcast and a tour to the East coast of the US. Francis then read for a BA in Music at University College, Oxford, during which time he was a Choral Exhibitioner with the Choir of Merton College, Oxford, a member of Schola Cantorum of Oxford, organ scholar at St Barnabas Church, Jericho and was also active as a conductor with a range of student ensembles and choirs. He completed a year’s tenure with the Oxford University Wind Orchestra, and worked with the Oxford University Philharmonia, as well as several college chapel choirs, both as a conductor and organist. Francis was also in demand as a dep for many of Oxford’s finest choirs. As a soloist, engagements took him as far afield as Salisbury. Francis’s compositions have been performed by several choirs in Oxford, including those of University, St John’s, and Merton colleges. After graduating in July 2015, he spent 6 months as a choral scholar at St Davids Cathedral, before moving to Truro, where he is a Lay Vicar in the Cathedral Choir, and Music Coordinator at Truro School. He also has a growing music teaching practice. When not working, Francis likes to be out exploring and photographing the beautiful Cornish landscape.
