Interview with Lauren Ingham

We caught up with Yorkshire-based Encore Ambassador Lauren Ingham to discuss her life as a freelance trombonist and school music workshop leader…

What was your first musical memory?

My first musical memory was probably learning the recorder in primary school, and then getting the opportunity to learn to play the trumpet – much to the displeasure of my parents…

Best gig ever?

Tough one! I’ve had loads of brilliant gigs, but more recently, I went to London to be a member of the ‘Women of the World’ Orchestra – an entirely female ensemble. Conducted by Sue Perkins and Sian Edwards, we performed on stage at the Royal Festival Hall with Sister Sledge, Bonnie Langford and Sharon D Clarke to name a few faces. Despite having the worst case of flu I sat on second trombone in a fantastic brass section made up of professional musicians. The whole orchestra were phenomenal musicians and I was really grateful to have had the opportunity to share that experience with them.

Why do you play music?

I’d say for the same reason I did when I first started at school: I do it for fun. I definitely still do it for that reason now, but as a much more serious kind of fun. I’ve met most of my friends through music, and most of my happy memories are linked to music in some way. I also play music for the sheer pleasure of sitting in an orchestra or a trombone section and just taking in the sounds around, the visuals of fellow like-minded musicians all in the same room getting a kick out of making music together.

Teaching music is another treasure; it’s so rewarding when you teach a child to read music or teach them something they found difficult and a light goes on inside them. You can see the excitement in their eyes when they get a question right or learn something new!

If you could perform with one musician or band from any era, who would it be, and what would you play?

Without a doubt, Don Lusher and his big band. What a bunch of incredible musicians. We’d perform things like “Peanut Vendor”, “Stardust” for trombone quartet. Can I cheat and say Maynard Ferguson also? Something big like “MacArthur Park” or “Gonna Fly Now”. The classic MF tunes.

Do you have any performances coming up that we should know about?

I have a lot of performances coming up, mostly orchestral concerts, and theatre productions. To keep up to date with my performances and musical antics – be sure to follow me on my twitter account or find me on Facebook!

Finally, what would be your essential desert island disc?

It’d definitely be Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Now, Then & Forever”.
