Ben Etherton is a cellist and singer currently based in Guildford. He completed his BA in Music at the University of Bristol, where he studied cello with Ioan Davies and singing with David Crown and Chris Gillett. It was here that he was awarded the Thomas Beecham scholarship for musical performance. With the generous support of the Elizabeth Eagle Bott Memorial Fund, he then completed his postgraduate diploma at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2016, having studied cello with Penny Driver and Richard May, and singing with Jeffrey Stewart. Ben is currently Bass Lay Clerk at Guildford Cathedral, having formerly sung at Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral and St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol. Ben has sung at the Proms, performed for live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and has sung on CDs with various choirs including the BBC National Chorus of Wales. Last year he gave a recital where he both sang baritone and played cello at the Churchill Room, Parliament Street, Westminster. Ben has performed as a singer, cello soloist and orchestral musician in UK venues such as Cadogan Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, St John Smith’s Square, the Holywell Music Room and St David's Hall. He has also performed in France, Italy, Hungary and America.. Some of the artists and conductors Ben has worked with include Raphael Wallfisch, Carlo Rizzi, Thomas Sondergard, Stephen Layton, Laurence Equilbey and Sakari Oramo.
