Director of Music at Pembroke College, Cambridge. Organist, Pianist, Harpist and Conductor.
Anna is an instrumentalist, currently studying at Magdalen College, Oxford, where she is the organ scholar. Anna started her musical career early, learning Piano from the age of 6 and violin from the age of 7. She also dabbled in various other instruments during her time at prep school, including viola, guitar, clarinet, percussion and flute. At the age of 12, she began training as a first study harpist at the Junior Royal Academy of Music in London, where she also had lessons in piano, violin, conducting and composition. During her time there, she was the principal harpist of both the Royal Academy symphony orchestra, and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, as well as playing keyboard in both orchestras when required. By the end of her six years studying at the academy, Anna had attained grade 8 distinction on harp, piano, violin and viola, gaining a gold award in her harp exam for the highest mark in the country. During her final few years at school, Anna began organ lessons with Gareth Price, leading to her being appointed as organ scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford, and is the first woman to have attained this position. This position has allowed her to pursue her organ playing to a high level, and also work on choral conducting and training, with plenty of opportunities to conduct the Magdalen choir. She is currently beginning her second year of study there, reading music, having gained a first in her first year. During her time with both the Magdalen choir and the National Youth Orchestra, Anna has performed in several high profile venues. With the choir, she plays for services 6 days a week in the beautiful Magdalen college chapel, with past tours to Holland, and exciting plans for future tours. The choir also makes frequent recordings, and does an annual BBC radio 3 broadcast. Meanwhile, the tours with the National Youth Orchestra visited venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and the Southbank centre, culminating in a Proms performance. Anna has now performed at the BBC Proms three times on piano, harp and organ, twice under the baton of Vasily Petrenko, and once under Edward Gardner. All three proms performances were broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and televised on BBC 4. Last summer, Anna played the piano with NYO for the Queen’s Coronation Festival Gala concerts, held in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, and televised on BBC 1. This offered Anna the opportunity to perform alongside Katherine Jenkins, Laura Wright, Eric Whitacre and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa to name a few. As light relief from the day to day commitments at Magdalen, Anna sings in Gareth Malone’s ‘Voices’ choir, performing choral arrangements of classic pop songs, and she recorded an album with them last summer. With Voices, Anna has appeared on the Classical Brit Awards, the Royal Variety Show, the One Show and various other chat shows. Voices have performed alongside many influential artists including Hans Zimmer, Lang Lang, Gary Barlow, Laura Mvula, Robbie Williams, and Bryn Terfel. Combining this with her work with Magdalen Choir and the National Youth orchestra provides Anna with an extremely rounded musical life.
