MMus accordion student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, based in Glasgow.

Valerie has been playing accordion since she was four and is currently in her first year of the Master of Music Performance course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly RSAMD) studying with world renowned accordionist, Djordje Gajic. She attended the Music School of Douglas Academy for her last year of school and was also a student at the Junior Conservatoire for five years. In her final year at juniors, she was the first recipient of the Sam Hutchings memorial award for her dedication to music and to the Conservatoire. Valerie enjoys playing as a soloist. When she was seventeen she made her concerto debut playing the Piazzolla Aconcagua concerto with the West of Scotland Schools Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of James Lowe. She has performed in national festivals and also at the Festival Internazionale Fisarmonica in Castelfidardo, Italy, the International Accordion Competition in Vilnius, Lithuania, and has attended masterclasses with James Crabb, Milos Milovojevic and Bjarke Mogensen. Last year, she played the Piazzolla concerto in the Conservatoire’s annual Piano Festival, and has performed regularly for the PLUG festival, No Nonsense Productions and the recently formed Hadit Collective for contemporary music. Most recently, she was highly commended in the RCS Bach Competition. As well as being a keen soloist, she also has vast chamber and orchestral experience and regularly enjoys many diverse performance opportunities. In 2016, she was invited to Dresden, Germany to perform in Szene12's chamber production of Puccini's La Bohème. She has performed with the RCS Symphony Orchestra, RCS MusicLab, Glasgow Barons, Glasgow Experimental Music Series and Kelvin Ensemble. Valerie also studied clarinet at the Junior Conservatoire with Alison Waller and has been involved with many orchestras and ensembles including the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland, West of Scotland Schools Symphony Orchestra, Arezoo Symphony Orchestra and the Kelvin Ensemble. Valerie is happy to be a musician for Live Music Now Scotland with her duo partner, classical violinist Eddy Betancourt. She is keen to promote the accordion as a classical instrument and raise awareness of it in the classical music world.
