About Twin Frets
Twin Frets, a guitar/vocal duo that bring a delightful mix of jazz standards, soul classics, funk grooves with a dash of reggae and blues. Twin Frets have played support to Courtney Pine (Nantwich, The Studio), Geno Washington in Runcorn and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at Southport Summer classics. “As part of the 12th Nantwich Jazz, Blues and Music Festival being held over the Easter weekend, the Museum played host to a performance of popular guitar music. Appreciative Festival visitors were able to enjoy the guitar and vocal style of Twin Frets – Vernon Fuller accompanied by Italian guitarist Willy Fluss. There was an excellent range of music in the two-hour performance. It was a case of full houses several times over as members of the audience arrived and then moved onto another venue as others literally took their places.” – Review of Twin Frets show at Nantwich Jazz, Blues and Music Festival. Twin Frets – A History An eclectic guitar and vocal duo "Twin Frets". Since the band was formed in the late nineties, Willy Fluss and Vernon Fuller have been regularly featured in many Jazz and Blues festivals throughout the Country, they have also supported the likes of soul legend Geno Washinghton, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Northern Chamber Orchestra in many high profile concerts. "Vernon and I first met and played together at the Penrith guitar show", says St Anne’s based Italian guitarist Willy Fluss, "we were both admiring and testing the beautiful guitars made by English luthier Ken Walton, when someone asked us to play a tune together. We started playing the riff from "All Blues" by Miles Davis, and then other tunes followed taking the unplanned jam effortlessly through jazz, funk, soul and reggae. Before we knew it, a little crowd had gathered by the Walton stand, as soon as we stopped playing, an old rocker approached us and said "your guitar styles are so compatible you should call yourself Twin Frets. Names stick, and after more then a decade and many gigs together we are still known as "Twin Frets" Over the years, the band has developed a truly unique musical language that blends perfectly the styles and influences of these two very individual musicians. Vernon Fuller started his performing career in his native London on the funk, R&B and reggae scene. Influenced by George Benson, Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau, and Bob Marley his vocal style has a natural warmth, rhythmic flexibility and richness which has delighted audiences throughout the Country . Vernon is also an outstanding guitarist, at ease with the great American jazz guitar tradition as well as the more contemporary funk, reggae and world styles. The unique guitar and vocal style of Vernon is perfectly complimented by the dynamic playing of Italian guitarist Willy Fluss, who appoints as his main influences John Scofield, Mike Stern and Wes Montgomery. Based in St Annes, Willy attended the full time jazz programme at Leeds College of Music where he graduated in 1995. As well as performing regularly in a wide range of settings and styles, he runs his own teaching studio. "Twin Frets provide a very healthy and relaxed creative environment for us both" says Vernon, "we rarely prearrange things, so we can always keep an open mind to how we interpret the music, we also have great confidence in each other's ability to understand and react to any musical situation." Twin Frets music takes audiences through an exciting journey from jazz standards to soul classics with occasional touches of reggae and township music, a dash of scatting and beat boxing, and a lot of great guitar playing.
